Basic buss compression. As long as we're on this track -- pun intended, of course -- you might as well teach them about NY style parallel compression and processing next. I've found that it works just as well for highly electronic music as it does for more acoustic compositions, and doing it in parallel allows you to dial in heavier compression while still keeping finer control over the whole thing. Plus, it's then easier to automate the effect in and out at different sections of the song.

On the drums bus using MAXIMUS, there's a preset called NY compression. That can be used. The LMH knob in Maximus controls the dry/wet ratio, gives best results when used subtly

If you choose ‘route to this track only’ how are you going to route the kick to the bass later for sidechaining?

Why not just lower the volume of the loudest drum channels instead of compressing them?
