Meaning of Religion - Dr Zakir Naik

Qul Ya 'Ahlal-Kitaab Ta`alaw 'Ilá Kalimatin Sawa'in Baynana Wa Baynakum 'Allah Na`buda 'Illallah Wa La Nushrika Bihi Shay'an Wa La Yattakhidha Ba`duna Ba`dan 'Arbaban Min Dunillahi Fa'in Tawallaw Faqulush hadu Bi'anna Muslimun.

My respected elders and my dear brothers and sisters, I welcome all of you with the Islamic greetings, Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu. May peace, mercy and blessings of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala), of Almighty God be on all of you. The topic of this last concluding session of the 5th Peace Conference ‘Peace – the vision of Islam’ held in Chennai is, ‘Religion in the Right Perspective’. Religion according to the oxford dictionary means a belief in a super human controlling power, a personal God or gods that deserves worship and obedience. In short according to oxford dictionary religion means ‘belief in God’. So if you can understand the concept of God in any religion you will understand that religion in the right perspective. I started my talk by quoting a verse from the Glorious Qur'an from Surah Aali Imraan, Ch. 3, V. 64 which says,
“Qul Ya 'Ahlal-Kitaab”,
“Say O people of the Book”
“Ta`alaw 'Ilá Kalimatin Sawa'in Baynana Wa Baynakum”
“Come to common terms as between us and you”
Which is the first term?
“Alla Na`buda 'Illallah”
“That we worship none but one Allah (swt)”
But one Almighty God.
“Wa La Nushrika Bihi Shay'an”
“That we associate no partners with Him”
“Wa La Yattakhidha Ba`duna Ba`dan 'Arbaban Min Dunillahi”
“That we erect not among ourselves Lords and Patrons other than Allah.”
“Fa'in Tawallaw”
“If then they turn back”
“Faqulush hadu”
“Say ye bear witness”
“Bi'anna Muslimun”
“That we are Muslims bowing our will to Allah (swt), to Almighty God.”
This verse of the Glorious Qur’an Surah Aali Imraan Ch. 3 V. 64 shows us a way how to converse, how to speak with different types of people

Which is the first term?
“Alla Na`buda 'Illallah”
“That we worship none but Allah (swt)”
But Almighty God
One thing common Alhamdulillah! In all the major religions, is the God that the followers of that religion worship, they believe He is the same God for themselves as well as for others. For example, the God which the Hindus worship, they believe He is the same God for the Hindus as well as the Non-Hindus. The God which the Christians worship, they believe He is the same God for the Christians as well as the Non-Christians. Similarly the God – Allah (swt) we Muslims worship, we believe He is the same God for the Muslims as well as the Non-Muslims. Thus the best way to understand any religion is to understand what the Concept of that God in that religion is, but if you have to understand the Concept of God in any religion, it is not appropriate to try and understand the Concept of God in that religion by trying to understand what the followers of that religion do. We should not judge the concept of God by judging the followers of that religion because many a time the followers of that religion, they themselves are not aware what is the concept of their God ...
