Who makes the best salt mix for your reef tank? Instant Ocean, Reef Crystals, Red Sea, HW, Brightwell, Tropic Marin Pro ? Actually, we don't plan to answer that question directly, but rather help explain why there is such a large debate over which is best and how all reefers may be right about their own choice. This one is sure to stir up some conversation!

Great video guys. I appreciate the effort and resources you put into doing comparisons. When it came to choosing salt for my systems, it really came down to our ability to buy it in pallet quantities sent on a box truck with a lift gate because big trucks can't make it up my driveway. Luckily I've been happy with the salt itself.

I love the way Ryan answers the likely question of if we didnt test your salt... that was the nicest way to say, if you want to know, do it yourself A++

I started with Instant ocean by Local fish store suggestion then switched by online views to Reef Crystals By Instant Ocean. I clean my mixing bucket every two times I make water. Note I make 10 gallons at a time so Its easy for me to do so. And my tank looks great.

I think one of the most important things with reef salt is consistency. When you find a salt that you like and it produces the numbers you are looking for, you want to be confident that it is consistent from batch to batch.

I'd love to see a salt testing group B! Esv, Aquaforest, 2littlefishies & Fritz.

I would have like to have seen Fritz in that group. I had read reviews on wikipedia that put instant ocean # 1. I was surprised since its the cheapest and available at petco so I bought it and planned on using it, but then I found out my LFS used Fritz and I read high personal reviews about Fritz (which I suppose like you said every salt, can likely have good reviews by people that swear by that brand) Anyway since my lfs had fritz onsale on tuesdays for a buck a gallon I have been using that, so far so good but I have never used anything else to compare it with! So easy to buy it premixed as well!

When you guys do comparatives, it is really valuable.

UV stability, ORP levels (initial and sustained) and DOC levels. Those are my questions.

What's bulk reef supplies findings on Fritz RPM salt that you guys won't stock it or mention it either?

I would love to see aqua forest in that set as well. They are one of the few (maybe only) that gives you the ability to get the ICP test results for your batch of salt but if there is no real benefit to the higher price then that would be useful to know as well.

I know a lot of people who use fritz RPM. I have personally used this salt for the last 1.5 years would love if you guys test it so I could see how it compares.

I've been ocean crystals guy for a while. And my last bucket mixing 1050 magnesium. I even got another test kit and it's the same. Dosing magnesium until I finish the salt and than switching to something else

Thanks for doing this BRS. Opening Pandora's salt bucket, for sure!

Brian, when I prepare fresh saltwater for a water change and I need to adjust the KH level...
Can I put the KH additive immediately after mixing the RODI water with the salt??
Or I gotta leave the fresh saltwater rest for a while before doing KH or CA approximations??

I got a serious question when I do a water change and I take out 5 gallons. Do I make sure the 5 gallons I put back in or the same salinity as the tank because somebody told me just to add freshwater so confused, please help.

I use liveaquaria.com salt for a few reasons. One it mixes clear fast and does not leave any Brown residue inside my mixing container . Two, it's very very close to the tank parameters that I like to keep my reef tank at. 3, it's definitely in the mid range for cost.

Literally spent the last 24 hours looking for a video exactly like this...

Great effort!...What is the "so what" of the brown residue in your mixing tank?  Something real like leaching (increased calcium) or just a bad feeling.

Timely. I am looking to switch from Red Sea Pro to something more stable and less likely to precipitate out and leave a mess.
