The number of reported cases of racial discrimination increased to more than 11-hundred in 2019. That's twice as many as four years ago. New figures released by Germany's anti-discrimination agency show the country is struggling to overcome problems with racism.
DW talks to Cultural and Scholar and decolonization advisor Peggy Piesche whether those numbers reflect the reality in Germany today.

Exyremly racist. I live in germany for 36 of my 39 years. I speak better german than my colleagues and neighbors. They still are racist towards me. I feel unwelcomed every day because my parents were born in Poland.

Have been living in Germany for 4 years… and i can confirm that i experience everyday racism. This is worst country to live for someone who looks not european.
History did not teach them anything and if there would be a chance they would repeat it.

I'm a brown man from Australia who moved to Germany with my German gf, we ended up moving back to Australia after 2 years. The move was a struggle from the day we landed. I could never get used to the rude cold people, the staring, the difficulty in apartment hunting, the endless paperwork and visiting different office departments to do simple things. As a mixed race couple we never had any issues in Australia but for some reason a lot of Germans seem to look down on people like us. Australia has a racist reputation but the racism we experienced in Germany was shocking, on a whole nother level and this was in the Rheine-Ruhr area, the most diverse. I honestly faced more racism in my 2 years in Germany than my entire life in Australia.

I'm from Europe, but when I see in the comments how close-minded Germans are I really don't have any will to visit that country.

I think racism in Germany is very nuanced. People don't act hostile or aggressive towards you (except bureaucrats ). You are just excluded out of social gatherings, people won't let you their homes if you are person of color, you won't get a date easily, people won't talk to you at bar/club or god forsake if you sit near a German guy/girl in bus; they will make such a face as if you are non-human.

On the other hand there are lot of other international students and you can befriend them easily and make life long friendships. Also there are some really nice Germans who are so well behaved, polite and empathetic that you will have a hard time believing that such people exists. I will never forget the kindness and caring behavior of my German teacher when I first came to Germany and didn't know much about German system.

So all hope is not lost. Its important to stay positive and keep an open mind.

As a person of color, the German speaking countries are the worst places you can go. It got so bad I left germany, even though I am half german and half afro-american and have a german passport. I moved to Spain where I feel totally accepted and I don't feel prejudged. In germany I could feel their eyes on me. If you are brown, stick to chill, tolerant countries, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, etc. I'm not saying these places are perfect. they are NOT. But they are better than Germany/Austria

Germany is a very racist country . I've been racially profiled so harshly. I was physically attacked once, I tried to report it but the police officers just laughed at me.. It may sound unbelievable, but it's my truth... I have nephews that have come home with bruises (the only POC children in their respective classes) and the school does nothing about it...

I was chatting with my mate in a public market in Dortmund when a German lady approached us to tell us we shouldn't speak English cause we were in Germany. Nutters.

I was going to start learning the German language but after hearing numerous stories of racism by Germans, now I figure it isn't worth it. No thanks

im brown skinned .I've lived in Australia, US , Germany(2 years) and few countires in Asia due to my work . But my worst experience was in Germany . Most people are really sick there, they dont know how to laugh, always stares you, quite rude, untill this was ok...but one day while travelling back home, a kid(approx 8 years old) made a very racist comment because of my skin and was making fun of me with his friends.I wonder, what they have been learning from their parents and teachers. Due to all these factors i left Germany. In our country, we should also treat germans the way they deserve.

One of the biggest mistakes I did in life was immigrating to Germany.
I cannot leave until my studies are finished and I have to live with all the coldness and darkness of it’s society.
