The Great Emu War was a real confrontation between emus and the Australian army in 1932.
These more than 6 foot tall ratites are solitary animals as long as they don’t starve. But this is exactly what happened in 1932 and thousands of emus trampled the harvest of native farmers in search of food. The Australian people were already suffering from the economic crisis and saw their existence threatened, so they asked the army for help.
However, despite the use of heavy machine guns, the soldiers were initially unable to shoot any emus. The animals even adapted to the threat and, as with protection against predators, one emu in the group was always on the lookout for soldiers to warn the others. Their speed of up to 30 mph helped them escape easily which is why after several weeks only just under 1,000 emus were shot, which hardly affected their population.
The problem recurred in the following years, but the army was no longer deployed. Only the construction of a 135-mile fence in 1953 provided a long-term remedy.
