Brushing my dogs teeth is a struggle but those expensive teeth cleanings at the vet's has motivated me to keep trying.😌😁

I got abused dog from shelter abroad who would bite his teeth together and run away every time I tried to wash his teeth. I tried all the tips my veterinarian and dog trainers gave me and I only got to clean outer edge of his teeth at most and had to get his teeth cleaned more often at the vet clinic. One of his back teeth had to be pulled off when I got him because the gum line had moved over 1cm due to dental stone.

One day I stopped giving him treats. Then I gave him big, raw meaty bone and when he bit it I brushed his teeth and then he got the bone as a reward. I started with shorter brushing time and used salt water at first because he disliked every dog's toothpaste.
Now I wash his teeth with soft electric brush (I use harder electric brush for his big teeth but don't wash gum line with it) and dog's toothpaste daily. I was told by vet that soft kids toothbrush is fine for sensitive or little unhealthy gums. Infected gums might need antibiotics and vet can give medical paste that makes cover to the gum for 24-48h keeping germs away.
I also make chunks of dry beef in oven (with high heat, oven door little open and 2-3h depending on size) and dry meat outside in winter which will clean my dog's teeth since he has to chew it well. Raw bones and junks of meat, cartilage, skin etc. are also great for cleaning dog's teeth, super healthy and dogs loves them. Meat markets sell them all for cheap.

My dog has stunning white teeth now. His gums bled easily at first from chewing bones and brushing teeth but after few weeks his gums became healthy and ever since he haven't had any gum problems. I take him to yearly check ups at the vet and he haven't needed any teeth cleaning after I started to brush his teeth daily and changed his diet.

I’m currently starting college rn but can’t help but want to already be on my own and I want to take my pit bull with me. We got him from a friend who had his dog give birth to a couple of pit bulls. My brother picked him out but I was the one to take him home so I was the first to have contact with him. Since I was young and barely in high school of course I didn’t have money of my own to care for him as much as he needs it. Yes he is loved and played with and fed, but of course he needs his shots and his hygiene needs to be taken care of. My parents, mainly my dad, take care of him but he desperately needs more so that he’s at his prime. They don’t love him as much as I do, he’s practically my best friend. So, when I have the opportunity to finally take him as my own, I made a promise to him that I’ll get him to his prime and give him the care he deserves. It sucks that money plays a factor into his needs but that’s just how the world works. Videos like these really help me have a understanding of this breed and just dog care in general. Right now I’m doing all the research I can so that I’m ready to officially take him. Any advice for blue nosed pit bulls would really help!

Prevention of Dental Disease (plaque build-up --> tartar --> loose teeth, etc)
0:51 - Tooth brushing - the best way to reduce dental disease
Find the right size toothbrush for you and a toothpaste your pet loves

1:10 - Dental Care Diet (prescription & non-prescription available)
(non-prescription examples: Hills Science Diet Oral Care, Royal Canin' Oral, Advance Dental)
Talk to your vet for which one could suit your dog best

1:26 Dental Chews and Bones

Long-lasting dental chews are best because the longer your pet chews on it.
Only effective if they are chewing on both sides of the mouth and scraping the surface of each tooth

1:55 Antibacterial Mouth Rinses (directly applied / soaked in toothbrush, soaked in a cotton/towel and wipe down teeth) and water additives (won't fix any present dental disease, but will help slow growth of bacteria and freshen breath.

2:21 Dental toys
Mechanically removing plaque through chewing.

2:37 Scale and polish annually at vet

Thanks Dr. Kim!

I have recently inspected the dog I adopted from my mother and I was appalled with the state of her teeth! She has some weird grey bump on one of them and the rest are getting this dark hue close to the gums. I think a visit to the vet is overdue and these tips will probably help too!

I brush my dog’s teeth every night and I’m glad that I’ve made that commitment because I just know my little buddy feels better having a clean set of teeth. He didn’t love getting his teeth brushed at first, but we found a good toothbrush and toothpaste and give greenies as a treat after so he will tolerate the brushing for the greenie after.

I spent ages scraping away the hard yellow tartar from the base of my dogs teeth.
He gets the electric toothbrush with small amounts of bicarb on the problem areas. Mostly I just clean the brush in plain water every so often.

Not gonna lie. Putting my cat under anesthesia freaks me out. Especially when he’s already got a heart murmur..

I have found all of my dogs past and present love red cabbage, cold and crispy out of the fridge is their fave. Is there any benefit? I never would of thought “red cabbage” but while shredding, some fell on the floor and the rest is history. I tried baby carrots, but nope. They munch on it like a little herd of goats (I have four under 8lbs). It’s pretty funny. I always wash it very well.
I finally learned when we adopted the last three pups that if you start brushing their teeth when they are six weeks old, they just accept it. One of our yorkis likes it! We use our old sonic care tooth brush heads. They are nice and small and can be replaced often. I put a thin layer of paste (it has to be peanut butter for my lot) and let them have a taste, then dip it in a little bowl of water. I work very fast. Lots of praise at the end and thats it. Do it once a week or if they eat anything that might stick to their teeth. Human food is the worst. It causes kidney failure in dogs. Yeah, we always thought “our dogs like such and such” until years later we learned it was causing kidney failure. A lot of our food is toxic. If you love them, save the popcorn and play with them instead. Never take away their water. Even at night. If we had, our maltipoo would be dead. He was well into kidney failure and drinking tons of water day and night trying to flush his system. If he hadnt had access to water it could of killed him. They can still live many years on an expensive diet of kidney care dog food.

Great video. The old maltipoo has rotten teeth and the last time i fought him to brush he ended up with dislocated vertebrae. He has a cleaning scheduled. It will cost over $350. Hes my boy.

I got my dog when he was 11 weeks old and since Day 1 at home I've fed him a BARF diet and have been brushing his teeth at least twice a week. Luckily he likes the taste of the toothpaste so before and after each toothbrushing session I let him lick some of the toothpaste off the brush to make him feel good about the whole thing.

Just called ABC veterinary clinic in Tucson and a dental appointment STARTS at $450.00! With 3 chihuahuas it’ll be close to or over $2000.00 per year! My dentist doesn’t charge me that

This costs more than a human dentist because of the anesthesia. FEW people can afford it.

Try using Organic Extra virgin Coconut Oil... Use a Very clean finger & nail / under nail & don't use the same finger to put pack int he coconut oil. Get some on your finger & first rub on your pet's gum's, along the gum line & add some more on all the teeth. Also, give a High-Strength, Multi-Strain, Dairy-Free ProBiotic with FOS in it. Also, give Plaque-Off Supplement.
