Why do YOU think we haven't made First Contact with aliens yet?

I feel sorry for the aliens on their way here from 65 million light years away who wanted a pet dinosaur.

The biggest thing about the dark forest theory is the two axioms of "cosmic sociology" stated in the book. Once you consider them it seems way more plausible however dark and morbid.

This reminds me of a quote from Arthur C. Clark.
Two possibilities exist: we are either alone in the universe or we are not. The thought of either is terrifying.

We haven't even figured out how to live peacefully among ourselves. So we usually imagine aliens as a loud conquering armada greedily taking whatever they want because that's how we'd behave as interstellar travelers. Hopefully any aliens have gotten their act together culturally before gaining technology to traverse the stars. And if we are in a "dark forrest" we're endangering ourselves by making so much noise.

The monkey that screams in the night is often easy food for the predator. That’s one theory for the radio silence.

Reminds me of the scene in Jurassic Park 1 how they're sitting in their vehicles trying to be quiet because the T-rex is out and about. But the kids are fumbling with the flashlight like idiots, which serves to attract the T-rex's attention. Meanwhile Grant is staying quiet in the other car, just watching and saying under his breath "Turn the light off, turn the light off!"

I think we're the kids flashing the light around making our presence known, while the other races are out there watching from afar, staying quiet, cringing and shaking their heads, knowing we're about to get eaten...

You haven't described the dark forest theory completely. It's like this. Due to the huge space of the universe and the unsurpassable speed of light, it would theoretically take tens of thousands, millions or hundreds of millions of years for the spacecraft of all planets to reach another planet. Therefore, when they detect the existence of other creatures in the universe, there is no way to determine whether the other civilization is a well-intentioned or malicious civilization. If they send a spacecraft to contact the other civilization, that civilization may have experienced a technological explosion in millions of years of travel time. And surpass yourself technically. Therefore, the safest way is to hide yourself at all times. When you find any other signs of civilization, use your most advanced technology to shoot at it.

Thinking deep into to this stuff gives me anxiety and I start to lose a grasp on what is reality. But I can't stop myself from thinking about it.

I think the reason we haven't discovered aliens yet is because of the vast spaces out there, where it takes a lot of light years to get to the closest stars. Maybe other civilizations have the same problem as we have and don't have the technology to travel faster than the speed of light.

You know a sci fi book series is good when it launches a new theory for Fermi Paradox, and what a horrifying theory it is.

We are all hunters in the forest, humans, extraterrestrial life. We avoid each other at all cost, because either we become the prey, or they do. The voyage was a mistake. It's like you've just lighted a campfire as a child and are now asking for attention from an adult. Any civilization will hide from you if they are a lower grade than you, which we can use the Kardashev scale as a reference. If we are a level 2 civilization (Which we are not, we're not even level 1), an alien life who is a lower level will very much likely hide from humans, because they are now the potential prey. A civilization at the same level would likely stay away from contact as well because two hunters in the forest fighting will most definitely attract another one to come. A civilization higher than us will now become the hunter and we become the prey.

And if you are thinking why the aliens couldn't be neutral, well, think back to our own history. When the English and the Spanish first came to the Americas, what happened to the natives? Dead, enslaved or assimilated as one of the Europeans. Think again to what happened to Africa during those times and before WWI, Africans are enslaved, they're abused, their land divided into colonies before WW1. There's absolutely no reason to think that aliens that find us will be neutral and that they won't enslave us, or just plainly take our land for themselves.

There could be chances where when two hunters/civilizations at the same level meet they'll be neutral to each other, but that would be extremely rare because you don't know when which one of the civilizations will suddenly advance in technology and destroy the other one. So the best way right now is to keep quiet. Because when a civilization higher in level comes and finds us, we'll likely be in deep shit.

But what if the curtain that stops us from encountering the aliens is time?

The "Dark Forest" hypothesis was the basis of Greg Bear's 1987 novel "The Fore of God and its 1992 sequel "Anvil of Stars."

Why presume aliens who evolved in a different climate and perhaps with exotic plants that may not act like our plants, would breath oxygen?
