Are we all just living in an elaborate simulation?

After movies like "The Matrix" (1999) posited the existence of a superficial world layered over our own, human imagination has run abound with theories about the nature of our reality. To a small but passionate minority, the red pill that can awaken us to this illusion is right at our fingertips.

World-renowned physicist Michio Kaku isn’t quite ready to take that pill. In fact, he’s skeptical that the pills even exist. He explains why.

If computers never existed, then the simulation theory wouldn’t exist, but we do know, that we live in our own minds. Doesn’t that suggest a “Simulation?”

I'd refer everyone to Donald Hoffmans work on this topic. What Michio Kaco is missing is that atoms do not have a set position or momentum until observed. Local realism is false (see 2022 nobel prize). In other words, the simulation only needs to render what is actually being observed, not the entire program at once. Think of a VR headset.

You don’t need to model all of the atoms in the universe all of the time. You only need to render the atom ppl are trying to measure.

Flight simulators don’t model every tree trunk of every tree when you’re flying at 30, 000 ft. It only models them when you’re super close up.

Quantum physics and General relativity allow for different rules at different scales and levels of abstraction.

Photons of light drive literally every atom in this universe, and photons do not experience time. The start of their life is simultaneously the end of their life. They also don't experience distance. The start of their destination is simultaneously at the end of their destination from their point of view. So... that to me sounds awfully similar to binary systems like computers. No computer can emulate itself on its own transistors. Doesn't mean a more powerful one can't. Just because we can't have a computer simulating the universe, doesn't mean it doesn't exist outside of this universe.

Mathematically impossible with our own technology.
Mathematically unfathomable with any other technology - not necessarily impossible. For all we know, we do exist in a simulation in a realm which is so vastly expansive and the technology is so incredibly advanced that too do so is possible. Furthermore, that realm likely would not conform to the potentially compatible simple physics of the universe simulated within it.
