This video is the first in one of the new series I am starting, known as Remarkable Engines; a mini documentary series similar to the "Engines of" series, but goes over a variety of engines from numerous different railroads, instead of focusing specifically on one railroad.

UPDATE 8/17/21: I am happy to announce that this locomotive has finally returned to steam after an 11 year restoration program! Expect to see a remake of this episode sometime in the future once it starts pulling trains for SMS Rail Lines, possibly in April 2022 for this channel's 2 year anniuversary.

Excellent video!
I railfan SMS Lines in Bridgeport often. It's always an experience seeing the old Baldwins in action. I'm looking forward to seeing #9 up and running in the near future!

Not only will #9 be pulling freight on occasions but she will also be used for excursion trains on the Woodstown Central Railroad

1:12 Notice anything special? The USATC S160 2-8-0 #611 pictured here deserves an episode of its own. It was fitted with experimental rotary cam poppet valve gear, but ultimately never got to prove itself. Ended up being used for target practice, and as a source of spare parts for other engines. Now it is/was being used by the T1 Trust to design #5550’s valve gear, to ensure a design is chosen that works.

Do you think that #9 will pull excursion trains

That is a good point, I had not stopped to think of its distinction as the only steamer to be reactivated for revenue freight. Now if a short line would just do that with a mikado or something...

I like how 4023 was lucky to pull the last steam powered train on the VBR line. Sorry if I keep calling it 4023. I just like it’s original US Army name.

Where will #9 run on if she gets there to completion and what excursions will it be pulling in the future?

I'd love to see a video on Escanaba & Lake Superior 300, quite possibly the last operating Baldwin RS12 in the world.

Hopefully one day sms 9 could go up to Calgary and do a triple header with 2023 and 2024 the only 2 other us army 0-6-0s in service

A bit on number 9's ancestry, as it is a classic USRA[WW1], design, slightly modified for continental loading standards! By the by, that would in itself be a good series also, as those designs had a very far reaching effects! Every continent, except Antarctica, had USRA, or war designed engines! The S160, 2-8-0's were the WW2 derived design, and also the 2-8-2's, which were extensively used in India, among other places! Fascinating history, now little covered! Thanks for the information, and awakening my brain cells! P.S., I grew up on the Oyster Bay branch of the LIRR, and saw the gamut of steam and diesel power, plus I went to high school in Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg, and saw the PRR Middle and New York divisions, close up! Lucky enough to see a Centipede in action, never forgot that, so your videos are more than just history, I was there, so thank you, for your diligence and persistence! 😇!
