In times like these one of the best parts of Mulan is how she never gives up love or being a warrior. In a time when love is tossed away to be perceived strong I have grown to admire this film even more than I already have because she remains a soldier AND marries Shane. That is courageous and feminine. You don't have to choose.

One of the best trailers for a Disney film - I remember as a kid being so excited to see this! And i love the usage of Hans Zimmer's music from Beyond Rangoon and Randy Edelman's music from Dragonheart. So gorgeous.

Still remains one of Disney's finest and most influential animated works after 25 years
It helps most of the characters are voiced by an all-Chinese cast giving it a real authenticity
Based on the real-life heroine Hua Mulan who took her fathers place in the imperial army and disguised herself as a man in order to bring honor to her family (I actually never knew that for so long)

The movie has fun action scenes with actual martial arts and kung fu, the Be A Man song is the most popular emphasizing stereotypical aspects of masculinity like strength and power but also mocking the concept of powerful female characters through sexist humor next to Reflection having us question our life choices, a wonderful score by Jerry Goldsmith, the animation is very fluid and expressive when it comes to the characters emotions, and this is a timeless feminist story
The avalanche scene is so grand full of scope and amazingly drawn
This soars by subverting the gender stereotypes and cutting the perception that one's gender should restrict choice
It is more groundbreaking right now given how conservative politicians are attacking the LGBTQ community being dangerous for kids, mainly around drag culture (mainly during the climax when our heroes dress up like ladies)
Sometimes you have to be someone else, just because you look like a man doesn't mean you have to be one, we are willing to save the ones we love even by lying or risking death, women can be strong in oppressive societies
Training, self-belief and the feeling of right and wrong is what Mulan excels at bucking tradition having strategy; she set the template for stronger females going against strict gender norms having women be more than physical attraction
A very fun film with high energy

I sometimes feel like Mulan… granted… I’m not Chinese nor living in that Dynasty and I’m not a woman… all true… I have no idea how Chinese historians and cultural leaders view things and works of art like this. It’s an interesting set of dynamics though.

I also like the concepts of change management and the actual Chinese themes of heavenly mandates, history, Sun Tzu and Confucius and reverences of testing and values of education. It’s not exact overlays of course.
