What is Ataxia? (Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention)

Ataxia is a neurological symptom of an underlying disease or disorder that affects muscle coordination. Symptoms can vary from dizziness to difficulty walking.

There are three types of Ataxia, with the most common being Cerebral Ataxia. Depending on which type of Ataxia the patient is suffering from, the symptoms will vary. The most common symptom among all three variations is lack of coordination and dizziness. There are many different causes for Ataxia some of which include genetics, injury, or ingestion or exposure to toxins. Alcohol consumption is the most common ingested cause.

In rare cases, the cause is unknown and thought to be a mix of environmental and genetic factors. Ataxia can be very life-altering and debilitating, but treating the underlying cause can greatly reduce and relieve the symptoms. Physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy are the main modes of treatment. Some patients may also need mobility aids and lifestyle adjustments. Other words include: Friedreich's, sensory, optic, truncal.

My 55-year-old sister suffers from what her neurologist calls "early-onset Ataxia". She cannot walk, or write, anymore. My mother has two cousins who also suffer from the same ailment and there's something I want to say about this. My mother married her first cousin, and my grandparents are also first cousins, and my great-grandparents are also first cousins. They all come from a small village where hardly anyone ventured out to meet other people. So, please, do not marry any family member because it might lead to some serious health complications for your children. Second, the fact that my sister's neurologist calls it "early-onset" tells me that everyone will eventually suffer from Ataxia which is basically atrophy of the cerebellum, parts of your brain dying off as you grow older. So, please, take care of yourself as best as possible so you can delay this condition for as long as you can.
