The most popular Greek soup has to be the classic Chicken Avgolemono. It is made with an egg-lemon sauce known as avgolemono, homemade chicken stock, flavorful chunks of chicken, and lots of zesty lemon juice. We think of it as Greek penicillin, especially during the colder months.

Dimitra I have to tell you how grateful I am for posting this recipe. I haven’t had homemade avgolemeno since my mother has been battling Alzheimer’s. I have been cooking the Greek dishes I love so much as a kid. I made it like a yiayia. I needed this to feel better and realize how much I missed my mothers cooking. Thank you again.

I always loved spending the night or weekends at my Yiayia and Papou's house as a kid..this soup brings me back..waking up to fresh baked bread too..RIP to them both❤

This needs a hell of a lot more likes. Adding lemon for fresh flavour and using eggs to bind a soup is well underappreciated.

My ex-girlfriend (who is Greek) left behind some amazing recipes and tips. Like how to make fresh easy pita bread for gyros (and adding the right vegetables for flavour!), that you need to squeeze cucumber for intenser, not-watery flavour of your tzaziki, use fresh herbs as vegetables (fresh dille especially!), bake oyster mushrooms like you'd do with a decent steak to eliminate meat to your diet, or how to prepare complete animal product so to not waste any product, like what you'd do with eastern goat stew. And above all, without spending a lot of time in the kitchen to make everything taste heavinly. Greek cuisine is cooking made easy and fun, pragmatic, but still by using all kinds of fresh ingredients. Absolutely love it.

This soup is well within my top three of recipes, so thanks for sharing your tips! I used the second and "to-the-go"-version of avgolemono soup before, but now I'm definitely trying the second version with seperated eggs!

My best friends mom would make this for me. They are Greek I am Croatian and never had it. I also LOVED when she made it with whole black bass(fish).That was my favorite ! Thanks so much!

I live in Greece for close to 3 years in the 1970s & have been looking for the exact recipe of the avgolemono soupa I enjoyed so much while I was there. I'm a tough critic since I know what it SHOULD taste like. I am going to try this today since we have a snowstorm coming in. This will be a wonderful warm up. I prefer orzo but since I don't have any, I'll use rice. I didn't remember that it had dill so that's maybe what was missing from my last attempt. Thank you so much!

So I've been wanting to make this for so long. I've never had it before even though we love Greek cuisine. My 14 year old daughter is home sick today so I thought this would be a wonderful cozy dinner to make for her, like a big hug! I found the recipe on your blog and then decided to also research on YouTube and ironically this video popped up straight away and it was a sign that I needed to make your recipe. Glad to see you added turmeric. It deepens the color and flavor of the soup without overpowering it, because the lemon brightens everything up.
