It's not /e/, it's the sound /ə/ that happens in unstressed syllables. Sounds like "but" or the first syllable in "ago."

I never noticed the wez thing before, but I think we still sometimes pronounce it was.

Especially if you’re emphasising the was word in a sentence.

Like, “were you really thinking about me?”

“Yes, I WAS!”

I wouldn’t say wez there… food for thought 🧠
