It’s funny how here in Ireland we’re normally years behind America in terms of technological and social advancements yet our power grid/network infrastructure is so much more advanced for such a small country. These switches are a thing of the past for us and even the safer version of the Triple Pole Switch with the elevated rocker type actuator are now being replaced by automated switches built by Nulec, Noja and Soule. Self Restoring/Healing network is the term coined by the business.

This is called a GOAB (Gang Operated Air Brake) because all 3 phases open simultaneously and it creates an air break in the line so that you can visually confirm no continuity.

I'll never forget the first time I threw a switch in. It was a 345kv, with the gang-operated helicopter blades. The sub-station operator looked at me and said "Wanna throw it in kid?", since I was still wearing gloves and sleeves from hanging protective grounds earlier. I set myself up, and started turning that handle. As soon as I heard it start arcing I stopped, thought about it for half a second, then started closing it as fast as I could because that's what I thought you did. The operator looked sick to his stomach when I turned around with that stupid grin 😂
