To expand on Tim’s comment, the conductor is inserted into a bracket that attaches to the end of the insulator string. It consists of a hook to attach to the insulator string, a plate to which a tap or jumper wire is bolted (in this case, between each set of insulators), and a receptacle for the line conductor. Inside that receptacle is a set of jaws that grip the wire. When the bracket is delivered from the factory, the jaws are in the back of the bracket, allowing the wire to be inserted. Behind the jaws is a small explosive charge that, when triggered, forces the jaws as far forward as possible, clamping the conductor into the bracket.

The explosives are used to crimp a large swage which will permanently connect two cables. This swaging can't be done on the ground since the cables are strung in sections from tower to tower and must be connected after they have been strung. There is an high explosive called Prima cord that can be wrapped around an object to either implode or explode it for whatever reason. The more coils of Prima cord wrapped around an object the more instantaneous high pressure can be exerted. It is a very high explosive in the form of a cloth shielded cable about as big as ones little finger. For cutting down a tree or pressure forming a steel well casing or setting off other more highly explosive products.

I had a young friend from Quebec who once told me the main reason Canada has an army is to fix the electrical grid after it gets destroyed every winter.

you ever wonder what guy at some random point in history was like "ok dude, we've got these two giant wires we gotta splice, what if we just wrapped the splice with a bunch of dynamite and set it off"

Really big cables are swaged by massive hydraulic rams. Ships cables, heavy lift crane cables, suspension bridge cables. These cables are in the 3 to 5" diameter range.

We used primacord for the energy source for seismic recording. Fun stuff. The detonation rate is 6400 meters per second. That means a 4 mile long cord detonates in one second if you detonate from one end. It also burns good. Great for starting a driftwood fire. Wrapping a can of ATF and detonating makes a huge fireball.

Is that really the best way or just the most fun...
