Today I'm showing you how I meter light when shooting film. This is a question I've received so often in the comments that I decided to just briefly break down the process in a short video - I hope this helps you out :)

An important aspect missed here is reciprocity failure of films for longer exposures. When shooting night scenes, you need to factor that in, there are dedicated apps for that as well.

Been using this app for months, had NO IDEA that you could adjust the exposure when taking the reading, such a good tip!

Love how you basically use the mirrorless camera on your phone to meter and preview your composition to shoot analog film.

An important note on the android app. On some phones the camera reading overexposes by like two stops. If you can, take a reading from your digital camera and adjust the EV tab in the app so you get the same reading (or maybe only like 0.5 over). You could also use the incident feature, if you're doing portraits (in my experience it's way more accurate).

Oh, i am looking forward to watching this one. I am still fairly new and just trying various things with my camera and film. i haven't really done much lower light city or fog types of pictures, so i am curious to your approach as i really like your results.

Just like to add something that people might not know of or could be useful but if you're using your built in camera app the "PRO" mode has the manual and auto settings which can also be useful to tell you the light metering.

DO you set the ISO to the box speed or do you set it to what how your pushing it on the camera? SO if I'm running Portra 400 at 200 on my camera do I have to account for that?

When you took those shots, did you overexpose your image, or did you just set the settings that the app told you to?

Do you have alternative light meter app? Because this one you use, Lghtmtr, keeps crashing on my iPhone 12. Very annoying!
