I blame Square Enix for having unrealistically high expectations. They always set their expected sales higher than what they should. If they really want to point fingers, point them at the Japanese market because FF16 sold less in their own home country.

Square enix themselves said FF16 sales were "extremely strong". The reason there’s drop for operating profit was because of amortisation and also MMO and mobile divisions going down. Infact HD games which FF16 is part of exploded for them. Thats why Square Enix said they’ll double down on AAA games like FF16 from now on.
