In this step-by-step tutorial, I show you how to create an attractive and functional Intranet SharePoint Site. An intranet is a great way to bring together all the various resources available within your organization and provide a one-stop-shop for employees to access the latest news and announcements, events, links, forms, policies, employee handbook, and other information. SharePoint Intranet can also become a great communication hub that will improve user adoption and user engagement within your organization.

The following topics and decisions are discussed in this video:

- Intranet Design Approach. The first step is to determine whether you will create your SharePoint Intranet from scratch or rely on one of the available SharePoint Intranet templates (within SharePoint or Lookbook). I discuss the pros and cons of each option.

- Decide on the Site type. The choice for the SharePoint Intranet is obvious - a Communication Site Template

- Content for SharePoint Intranet. One important step in creating the Intranet is to determine the types of content you would like to add to your SharePoint Intranet. Once you determine the content types, you can then translate the content into specific SharePoint Web Parts that would help you achieve the objective.

The following types of content and web parts are covered in this video:

News & Announcements. News Posts and News links are an important staple of many Intranet portals, where you can share the latest news & announcements with the employees. For this purpose, we use the News Web part.

Events. Every organization has Events to capture, so Events or Company Calendar is a frequent request for SharePoint Intranet. There are a few calendar options available in SharePoint. However, the Events Web Part is a better choice.

Links. Links are another popular type of content. You always needs to link/create shortcuts to various sources. There are many different ways to present links in SharePoint. The two options/web parts I cover for links in this video are Hero Web Part and Quick Links Web Part.

Weather. Weather display is a great way to spice up the SharePoint Intranet. For this, I demonstrate the Weather Web Part.

Current Time. If your organization has offices in different locations and time zones, then the Current Time of that location might be handy. For this, I demonstrate the capabilities of the World Clock Web Part.

Map. Sometimes, you might want to display a certain address (i.e., of your corporate location or facility). We do have that capability as well in SharePoint - Bing Maps Web Part.

Countdown Timer. Sometimes you want to notify your users about the approaching deadline (Project Go-Live or Benefits Enrollment). For this, I explain the benefits and settings of the Countdown Time Web Part.

Call to Action. If you need your employees to take action on something, then the Call to Action Web Part will help. It displays the nice looking button with CTA redirecting user to a dedicated link.

Images. If you have a catalog of images and photos - you can use an Image Gallery Web Part. It will definitely make your Intranet more attractive.

Videos. Users love consuming video content on social media. You can also include videos on SharePoint Intranet and display a single or multiple videos. For this, we use the new Stream Web Part in SharePoint.

I also explain how to add a logo and adjust the overall site theme (color palette). Towards the end of the video, I also explain how to set up the proper permissions, convert the site into the Hub (so you can connect other sites to the Intranet Site), and integrate the Intranet with Teams (via Viva Connections).

I commend you on an outstanding educational video. I've searched through TONS of Microsoft pages for help and none come close to what you have provided in a very concise manner. Thank you.

What if many members of my team are not users of Microsoft? Can I use this as a free member training area for people that join our installer program?

Hi Gregory its really great tutorial. I have an issue related to the mobile experience. Can we override the viva connection mobile landing page using the sharepoint site instead of the default viva connection homepage? I manage to do this via powershell but only for the desktop and web, no luck on the mobile.

Hi Greg, thank you for the video. If I create a communication site and want to grant access to someone outside the organization to access documents on the site, how much security challenge does this pose? Also if you have a video on this, please refer me to it

Hello, thank you for the video, but when I put a vertical section, it is displayed horizontally and entirely at the end of the page.

How to remove the margin around the hero web part so that its top aligns with the background color of the right vertical section and fits together just like the way it looks in your company-intranet site.

Was this tutorial all built on a communication site? I am having a hard time knowing which one to use for a training site.
