Merger:

Definition: A merger happens when two companies combine to form a new single company.
Outcome: The two original companies cease to exist, and a brand new entity is created.
Purpose: Mergers often occur to achieve synergies, reduce competition, or enhance overall business strength and efficiency.
Acquisition:

Definition: An acquisition happens when one company buys another company. It's like when one company takes over another company.
Example: If a big computer company acquires a small software company, the big company now owns and controls the smaller company.

There is also an accouting difference :
- In a merger transaction, you get shares of the buying company as a compensation
- With an aquisition, you get nothing as an investor
