"Kuchisake-onna" is a figure in Japanese urban legends and ghost stories. Translated as the "Slit-Mouthed Woman," Kuchisake-onna is often described as a woman wearing a surgical mask, which is not uncommon in Japan, especially during periods of illness or high levels of air pollution.

According to the legend, Kuchisake-onna is said to approach individuals, typically children, and ask a question like, "Am I pretty?" or "Do you think I'm beautiful?" If the person responds affirmatively, she reveals her face, which is mutilated with a large, gruesome slit from ear to ear, and asks, "How about now?" If the person answers negatively or with fear, she is said to harm or kill them with a pair of scissors she carries.

The legend has various versions and has been told in different ways over the years. It has also inspired movies, books, and other forms of popular culture. The tale of Kuchisake-onna is an example of a yokai, a class of supernatural creatures in Japanese folklore.
