Something interesting is that this is probably the most accurate depiction of the life in Ancient Rome. It was wild, noisy, restless, full of sales, and most importantly colorful

My high school Latin teacher used this movie as a fun way to wrap up our unit on the plays of Plautus. Best 2 days of class that year.

The last movie of Buster Keaton (1:17) before his passing that same year... RIP, Thankyou for all these funny movies you've left behind.

RIP Sondheim! This is a terrific tune. Surprising that the staging of it here is so clunky, though I like the way Lester is filming Roman streetlife in a verite style.

Fun Fact: The actor playing Senex's son Hero is Michael Crawford, (1:48) who would later go on to musical fame as the original Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera".

I first saw this movie in an English language theater in Rome when I was there on a foreign studies program in 1971. I'd never laughed so hard in my life.

I gotta believe this film inspired Mel Brooks' conception of the Roman segment in "History of the World: Part 1, " but both are awesome in their own right.

Superior comedy. Best line: "Was one a year" when Zero was checking out a wine. Last role for Buster Keaton. Wish Zero could have starred in the film "Fiddler on the Roof" that he played on Broadway. Zero's greatest movie, IMHO, was the 1968 The Producers.

I had a question on this in the film music round of my church quiz last night. I am so sad that the wonderful Stephen Sondheim has died. What a gracious man and what an amazing legacy of music and words.

How good is Zero Mostel!? Saw this back in the 1970's on British tv & loved it. To my knowledge it has not been televised on terrestial tv so much as once more in the 40 odd years since on UK telly
