my first thought was that the curve is symmetrical in the line y=x, so since the area to the right of the line x=1 was equal to a 1/3 it'd be the same above the line y=1, leaving a 1x1 square of area 1 in between them. same would go for the negative side of the y axis, so then adding those two squares and two sets of 1/3, for a final area between 1 and -1 of 8/3, but i see now why that'd be wrong.
