Two types of hand warmers and two that you can DIY in seconds. These hand warmers vary in temperature and time. One type can reach a temp of over 350F and one keeps a steady temp of 120F and last for 20-30 minutes with reusable components. I also review 3 commercial hand warmers and talk about my favorite type. Whether it's a sporting event or a long hike these personal heaters can keep you warm on the coldest of days.

With the hot hand warmers, if you use for an hour or two, put them in a zipper bag that is the closest to the size of the hand warmer, push out as much air as possible before zipping closed. They are activated by air and once the air is removed, they shut off. So by unzipping them from the bag, they will reactivate once exposed to air again. I’ve used the same hand warmer up to 3 times (days). They will usually give you about the total time they are rated for.

Put them in a waist pouch with the heat on the back of your body, up against the kidneys, heats the whole of your body via blood circulation. I learned this as a Navy diver.

I have chronically cold feet from a frostbite accident when I was a child. The Hot Hands for your feet are a godsend. I adhere one under each foot under my toes, and they last all day. Another godsend for my feet is the insoles I make from those silver car windshield sun protectors. They have two outer layers of shiny mylar with a thin, dense foam center. The silver on the bottom reflects the cold back to the ground, and the top layer reflects the heat back to your feet. I have them in all my winter shoes and boots. When I buy some new boots, I bring a pair of them and some heavy socks to ensure the new ones will fit.

I have been using those ones that are in the cloth bags. You need to use the bags. The hand warmers get so hot that they can burn you BUT that thin bag gives you just enough insulation to keep you from getting hurt. There is another type that takes long charcoal bars. You light one end of the charcoal bar and then open the metal case and place on the fireproof material and close the case. Those ones have a velvet type outer covering.
Finally there is a military one that is reusable.
You just add water and it will get hot for hours. After it runs out you let it completely dry, crush the large masses that formed inside the bag (you cannot open the bag), and it can be reused over and over.

USB insoles and USB gloves are amazing. You can turn it off after you warm up. You can also buy the heating elements.

I know its a bit off topic...but WOW
Those bonsai are BEAUTIFUL!
Looks so cool how ya did em! 😃
Side note: a strip of tape across the top will also help the heater stay sealed without a risk of the staples nicking anything if it gets moved around a lot in your pocket🙂

@Zen Great idea about hand warmers imo - the MRE ones cook a meal. The baggies you showed are a good idea - I would have to use 3 - 4 of them given Murphy's Law😅 Again, ALL great ideas imo - that may be the only warmth available for some if the power goes out due to storm etc. God Bless You & Us 1 & All This Holiday Season! Stay Warm😉🙏

To save your catalyst and light it more reliably, use the torch to heat up the metal just under the catalyst for a few seconds first, so that it vaporizes the fuel. Once the fuel is vapor, you just barely touch the catalyst with the flame and it'll light up right away. The more you hold the flame to the catalyst, the sooner it'll degrade.

If you put the warm bag in a beanie hat or a hot water bottle cover , they'll stay warm longer. Great ideas Thank you Zen Garden 🩷

I also have two zippo hand warmers and an electric model. The zippo will burn 8 plus hours on a full fill. Lighting them can be tricky. There is a quantity of platinum in the wick that causes a reaction similar to a catalytic converter based on my understanding. All the electrics and the zippo’s work but there is certainly a convenience in having the disposable hand warmers. I tested a 18 hour “super” version from Amazon and it worked great and created heat for at least 15 plus hours before cooling down.

Great advice, thanks for sharing! I’m especially interested in your first suggestion to use calcium chloride and water to make a hot pack. This would make a great addition to an emergency bag for your car in the winter.

But I would just keep a small bottle of water already mixed with some of the calcium chloride to help keep it from freezing in the car. Then pour it into one of the bags of dry calcium chloride stored in the car when I’m ready to activate the heat in the bag.

I usually bring along a bottle of water from home to stay hydrated while I’m out on the road anyway. But you have given me a great reason to bring an extra bottle of water with me.

The zippo heater is a clone of the original Jon-e heater. Jon-e used to make a belt with room for 2 of the heaters that was meant to be worn so that the heat was kept directly on the kidneys. I had one of those belts and let me tell you that it would help to keep you really warm. A great product that has been lost in time.

Let's not forget the use of a hot baked potato wrapped in foil. Today we can microwave a potato in 8 minutes. Wrap in foil and be on your way.

#4 rechargeable electronic heaters - there are much thinner ones on the market for years, only 6mm thick, which are good for some one hour of heat.
#5 chemical handwarmers - a) they work on iron powder, that's rusting if exposed to oxygen (air), recycling it would require turning rust back into iron powder again - the heat produced refers to how fine the powder is, I doubt it will work well.
b) there are several sizes, hand warmers, toe warmers, neck warmers and even lower-body warmers, which utilize three big square packs in a belt with three pouches.
Shaking them well will increase the heat, but lower run-time, putting it in plastic bag to reduce the amount of oxygen will increase run-time at a lower heat.

Nice video. My only advice is that the ignition flame should never touch the catalytic element in your Zippo warmers. The flame is meant to rise vertically through the notch with the warmer base held horizontally (flame adjacent and perpendicular to the catalyst) in order to convectively draw the fuel up (sideways) and out. Burning the element the way you showed will significantly shorten the lifespan of your catalysts. Good luck!

I really prefer the hot hands brand because they are all biodegradable and harmless to wildlife if dropped. Please keep warm but respect the environment and woods that we all enjoy.
