Very nice! Calcium chloride is also sold as painter's desiccant in fine chips. It's hygroscopic which means it absorbs water so easily that it pulls humidity from the air! Probably better to use the rock salt version shown here for hand warmer purposes because the fine chips in painter's desiccant stand a chance of heating up too much and causing burns, or maybe even melting through the plastic bag!

This works very well. I have done this in the past. If you want instant ice, try some ammonium nitrate crystals instead of the calcium chloride. :-)

it's a great idea but the hand warmers can't be re used which means you will keep spending on chemicals making it expensive in the long run, just buy gloves but nice video

Calcium Chloride does not get warm when it contacts cold, it releases heat when it dissolves in water, so no matter the temp it will get warmer when it gets wet.

It's here 9° right now. A few day ago it was 15° a record for highest temperatur in januari. Normaly it should be between -10° ore 5°. And we never had a lightning storm ever before in the winter. meanwhile we hear some cold trouble at the other side of the ocean.

kipkay what if you just used some ice or an icepack in the smaller bag so it lasts longer. Would that work?

Sounds like a great idea but what if it's out in freezing temps before you use it and the water bag freezes? Is there something safe you can add to the H20 to keep it from freezing?
