My mom just surprised me with a pair of Momotaros from her trip to Japan. She’s entirely oblivious to selvedge and really really bad at attention to details. So I gave her a pair of my best fitting jeans and told her to go to Hinoya in Tokyo and just get whatever matches best with the jeans I gave her. When she got back, I pulled the jeans out from the bag and the first thing I immediately noticed was the signature stripes on the back pockets. And I just lost it! lol She had no idea she brought home a pair of the some of best denim on the planet!

I remember going through this phase yrs ago (2009 to be exact I’m an old head lol😅) and I know the the feeling of pouring hrs of research in to Japanese denim even more so when I didn’t have money and I saved for the pair I was eyeing for months AND not only that, wearing that same pair for almost a year lol. And this was the time before YouTube so people didn’t know about or understand the appeal of Japanese selvedge and fades and what not but regardless your current passion just took me back to that time getting into denim. Being a denim head, Your denim is now a part of you and certain points in your life and memories will be attached to them… crazy as that sounds to me, that’s another one of the great things about Japanese selvedge 😌

PSA for those getting into raw denim: don't baby your jeans and obsess over how/when to wash them.
Just wear them hard and wash them when they're dirty. You'll get sick fades regardless

The amount of research in this video is very very *VERY* much respected. 🤜🏾

I was on a selvedge denim binge back in 2012 to 2015 and bought up a ton of pairs that will last me the rest of my life, haha. Two of my favorite brands are Pure Blue Japan and Oni denim. My current pair that I wear as often as I can and have some nice fades on them are a real nice pair of Oni denim.

Been a fan of Japanese Selvedge since 2004. Started with Naked & Famous and scaled up from there. Wear what you love!

This was an incredibly informative video. I went to Japan and stumbled upon Evisu - walked out with 5 pairs and I will treasure them forever. I’m going back to Japan soon and can’t wait to look at some more of these brands

Love learning more history of denim, great video. As a denimhead for over a decade, I strongly suggest you pick 1 pair and really go through the aging/fading process before you consider giving a true review on what/who has the best denim. Until you actually put in the wear, it's pretty difficult to give a real opinion.

I share the same passion completely. Nothing better than an intentionally made, sustainably-sourced, well-fitting garment or shoe. It’s as exciting as a great song or a memorable meal.

I’m at around 15 pairs now, with Oni and The Strike Gold being my favorite pairs. It’s super addicting, and especially my chore coats.

As someone who worked in the cotton mill industry for over a decade I always tell people selvage does not indicate high quality at all it's simply the end of the role of cloth and the type of loom I was mostly on projectiles as most companies turned to them for greater efficiency and to pump out more fabric faster but still completely understand the process so I tell people don't always think selvage means higher quality and pay more the only argument is do you want it made more traditionally or not it doesn't mean it's tougher or will last longer you're just paying for tradition

cool to see clips from The Iron Snail, very underrated channel. heavyweight denim is not for me, I tried and didn't love it, but that does not stop me from appreciating the craftsmanship and work behind all the high quality denim. good video Drew, great channel, much love from Mexico 🇲🇽.

about 10 years ago I was in a Gucci shop [in Harrods] explaining to the assistant about selvage jeans, while trying on a pair, we, I was delighted to find that the jeans were made by Evisu.. £250 pounds later, still have them, sadly only worn them about 5 times, when it says 32 waist you'd better be a 31.5.... or leave the top button un done

To be fair the system definitely only mainly tells us cotton. The slaves in South Carolina were growing indigo as well. You should look into Eliza Lucas Pinckney. She’s said to be one of the people that sorta kinda started the American indigo trade.

Its a great obsession. My first pair of raw denim was Levis dead stock 501 big E which i found in American Classics. Then moved onto Evis before they went mass market. Still wearing some of them now
