Ski Like A Pro | 3 drills to help you carve like a racer

We've all seen ski racers and expert skiers carving down the mountain, getting their hips and body so close to the ground as they arch out turns, have you ever wanted to know what their secret was?

Katie White, head of Portillo Ski School in Chile takes us through a number of the drills she used when she was learning and gives you tips and techniques to help.

By working on rolling her feet in a basic parallel, directing pressure to her outside ski, and working on her edge rolls, Katie is able to really get her hip on the ground, and carve out some 'mad angs'.

Katie is also using Carv to help identify what she needs to work on, and how she can improve.

Thank you Katie
I have skied for years. I have just come back from the indoor Snowcedntre in Hemel Hempstead, England. And am very excited!
Thank for the excellent video, I have been struggling for some time to make more than a smidgen of progress despite trying. Even when using Carv, combined with ski instruction, progress had been elusive.
Thanks to your video, I concluded that without me being aware, I had been “hip dumping”, moving to the inside of the turn too soon.
But now some success! I concentrated on the skills in your video (I largely used the Edge Similarity Monitor in Carv), and at long last, my Ski IQ bumped itself up to 116 (from 101, 106 and 107).
The progress came after reaching the Edge Rolls skills sequence and then it happened, I could hear the scores bumping up! Yeh! Wow!
Lots of work for this keen 79 year old to do but VERY excited and VERY pleased. Thank you.

I think what's most important to have your hip near the ground is a seating position required for extension retraction movements when you switch from right to left and backwards

Great presentation. Thanks. Not sure, though, that it is anatomically safe to encourage that much lateral movements of the knees.

Thanks, super helpful. For the editors, I find lyrics in background music distracting (unpleasant)

Hi. Thanks. Ex-racer. I think you just demonstrate these skills using gates. ❤

Getting narrow waist carving/frontside skis with freshly tuned edges will help obviously

I’m always suggesting career opportunities for my 14 year old son. Let’s see…Ski coaching at Ski Portillo and Yellowstone Club. Not a bad one Katie! I don’t own any narrow skis. Is there something special to focus on on 98’s +? I do own the Carv inserts.

After many videos, This is first time I see clearly what is CARV and how to buy it.

I hope I can ski like that. May I ask what is the mobile app you were using?

Hello, I’m a beginner to intermediate and learning to carve currently, how will Carv help me in my pursuit of a carved turn? I’m worried it is aimed at more of the intermediate/advanced/pro who can already perform a full carved turn

I am practicing at my dry slope in Norwich UK about twice a week, being artificial the run isn’t long and I can only fit a few turns in, will Carv be able to provide enough feedback?

Thanks

The hard icy snow early in the morning is killing me. No matter how sharpened the ski edges are, I loose grip and balance. On a softer snow I ski like a pro (blue run of course).

Is this useful for skiing powder, too?
