In the USA, and to a lesser extent in mainland Europe, homes on non-commercial airfields have been popular amongst the aviation community for some time. They provide easy access and a community location for fellow aviators.

Homes adjacent to golf courses and marinas are popular among the golfing and sailing communities but so far such homes on airfields have not been available for aviators in the UK.
Hangar Homes has been set up to address the concept of allowing light aircraft owners the opportunity to live on the airfield in homes above their aircraft hangars.
What are the benefits of Hangar Homes for Airfield Operators?

For many General Aviation airfields it’s a struggle for the airfield operators to make the airfield financially viable.

Apart from the sale proceeds from each plot, each hangar home would contribute to the running costs of the airfield by paying for a landing card and a maintenance charge for airside access, helping to make it more sustainable.

The presence of a Hangar Home will also generate interest among the aviation community which will increase the number of visiting aircraft and the additional income they bring.

What is the environmental impact of Hangar Homes?

Hangar Homes are eco-friendly and built with sustainable materials. They are designed to be as energy efficient as possible thereby reducing environmental impact and costs to a minimum.

Underfloor heating throughout with thermostats in each room.
Rainwater capture for toilets.
Air source heat pump for heating and cooling.
Triple-glazing for heat/cold retention and sound-proofing.

At which airfields could Hangar Homes be built?

The ideal locations for Hangar Homes are the smaller GA airfields with flying during daylight hours only, as opposed to the busier medium and large airports that have commercial air traffic.

Several airfields in the UK are potential sites and these include the historic Solent Airport (formerly RNAS Lee-on-Solent) in Hampshire and Newtownards Airfield in Northern Ireland. Why buy a Hangar Home?

Living on an airfield is not to everyone’s taste but for some aviators it makes perfect sense. For them, waking up on a sunny morning, having breakfast on the balcony and then going flying is about as good as it gets.

A Hangar Home could be a good investment as there would be a limited supply on any given airfield with a much greater demand from other buyers, depending on the location.

In the UK all GA airfields are mixed-use for leisure and business aviation, training, maintenance, hangarage and parking.

Hangar Homes have been specifically designed for use on airfields in the UK and Europe with a small ‘footprint’ taking up less space on the airfield than hangar homes elsewhere like those in the airparks of the USA.

Also, they are only a little over 7m high, no higher than a conventional single storey hangar, thus they blend in easily with the other buildings on the airfield.  That's about the same height as a bungalow and lower than a two-storey house.

Saw a leaflet on hangar homes in my local club, although completely out of my financial reach, loved the idea.

We have hundred of airparks (as we call them, or also fly-in community) in the USA! As long as reasonably priced for land parcels there should not be much of a problem finding buyers even if they do not yet own their own airplane (or helicopter [where permitted] with their own pad). There are some unique ones where the only access is flying in due to being on a mountain, or ones where the airport is separate from the community which is attached to the airport by an access road by medium or small airplanes or automobile with additional private hangars on the field for larger aircraft and helicopter is also permitted. There are even small sized ones for ultralight with grass or even water runways for float/sea planes.
