I remember in the beginning when SSD'S first came out this was an issue, but now it seems Microsoft has addressed the issue and improved.

This has been on the back of mind for some time, now I know more.
Thank you Brian!

Thanks for this. It started just searching "defragmentation hdd benchmark" just to see how much improvement should be and if it really makes a difference or not. I learned that yes, it makes difference but also I saw the title of this video later and after watching the video I learned that at least from Windows 10 and on also Windows take care of SSDs optimizing them. You'll never go bed without learning something new.

Run my SSD's on a schedule, works likke a charm. I rarely used to defrag my hard drives, but trim is different and required in my mind

I was told awhile ago not to defrag SSD's then I was watching another computer youtuber that taught me that Windows will take care of the SSDs if you set it to do so, I set it for once and month and it does it thing, thanks for the Video Brian you have made a lot of useful tips and tricks I have benefitted from over the years, I really enjoyed when you built computers and played the games, but that was a few years back.

A little tip If you uninstall a large game on a SSD it's a good idea to go in and do a manual Trim before you install new games to that drive.

Thanks Brian, good info as always.
I run Windows "Automatic Maintenance" every few weeks, or run Win Drive Optimization manually every week. This seems to work for me. Otherwise, Drive Optimization is not scheduled to run. I basically defrag manually using the windows built-in drive optimization feature.

Brian. Thanks for the video.
How much should the fragmentation be before you defrag the drive?

This is perhaps where partitioning your drive could be useful instead of allowing the operating system to use the entire drive..In the linux universe the trim command is run automatically and can be configured as to when the trim is initiated.

thank you for the information, good job👍

Good one mate. BTW: setting your SSD's on a Trim schedule never works. I go in once a week and do it manually. Trim is like emptying your recycle bin on an ssd. If not done often, it can take up a lot of space in the background. You will wonder why the reported free space is not available. G'day friend. 👍👍👍

Personally I use PerfectDisk to manage my HDD. SSD's and NVME's do not require defragmentation. But with PerfectDisk I can eliminate fragmentation on my HDD.

Wrong. Whether you like it or not Microsoft will defrag your SSD every month. Unless you disable it.

My experience with O&O Defrag is it defrags my hard drives better than Windows does. I run it once a month if needed.

Something I'm wondering is when i used Defraggler for my 10TB HDD it says it's going to take a couple days to fully defrag the drive but then I also have automatic defrag enabled in Windows for once a week. I don't leave my PC on for a bunch of days at a time so how exactly is Windows defragging the drive if I am shutting my PC off at the end of the day? Is the defragmenting process starting again when I turn my PC back on the next day or is Windows basically NOT fully defragmenting the drive?

Well there is the new Spinrite 6.1 out very soon. From tests in development it has found SSD's are not optimized and not what the trim command does, it shows the beginning is not the same as the middle or the end. Anyhow, worth doing a separate video on it.

Tears ago to Defrag would take hours back when I had Pentium 1.2 .

Is there any risk to running De-fragmentation or Consolidation on a HDD? For example can you lose data if the process is interrupted or there is some kind of read/write error?

Re SSDs, I also check my Samsung Magician every few months to make sure my ssds have the latest firmware and are set to the proper performance modes, run diagnostic checks and temps and benchmarking....
