One of the saddest events in Thanos' comic book history revolves around his tragic relationship with *Death*. In the comics, Thanos is in love with the personification of Death, often depicted as a female entity. This obsession drives him to commit horrific acts, including his infamous quest to gather all the Infinity Stones and erase half of all life in the universe.
What makes this particularly tragic is that no matter what Thanos does to gain Death's affection, she remains indifferent. In *The Infinity Gauntlet* storyline, after he successfully wipes out half of all living beings, he presents the achievement to Death as a gift, hoping to finally win her love. Yet, she still ignores him. Thanos is heartbroken, realizing that all his efforts have been in vain, and his love will never be reciprocated.
