Finally get to see where all the crucible maps for the past few years went.

This trailer perfectly sums up the experience of playing an extraction shooter, you run half way across the map with your loot only to get one tapped by a sweaty camper.

Bungie has always known how to identify its franchisies with unique Iconography, The rings from halo, The Twin Moons of Destiny, but a ship piercing a moon recontextualizing a logo from 30 years ago? brutal

0:23 According to the official website, the implication is that the current year is 2850. The Pfhor assault on Marathon occurred in 2794 (the original story of Marathon). The Pfhor returned to destroy the Tau Ceti colony only months after that story ended. What transpired is not quite as certain, but the rogue A.I. Tycho joined in with the Pfhor while Leela was captured. Durandal during the first assault had already stolen a Pfhor ship with the help of the individual we should probably just codename as "DESTINY" because "Mjolnir Recon #54" is a mouthful. None of the original three had stayed there from what we know. Marathon 2 happened 17 years later where Durandal and DESTINY freed the S'pht and started the long journey towards ending the Pfhor's conquest of the galaxy. This game takes place after Marathon 2 and, if we embrace the crazy, Infinity which followed immediately after Marathon 2. It takes place before the end of the war, however.

The website also refers to "long-dormant A.I." If the ship that has penetrated this moon (I don't think EITHER of these things are the Marathon, which was shaped out of Deimos... a non-spherical moon of Mars) is a Pfhor ship, its derelict may harbor either a Pfhor A.I. or a clone of Tycho or Leela. It is known that clones of Tycho continued to delay the defeat of the Pfhor at the hands of Earth and the S'pht'Kr through around 2861, which sets the setting for this game on the relative endpoints of those efforts. The ship may have been involved in the original destruction of the colony OR it may be a more recent artifact. Tycho or a Pfhor construct is a hostile A.I. to humanity. Leela would be an unknown. If, by some strange and lucrative occurrence, it were Durandal, he should be RELATIVELY benign given an appropriate amount of memory. The problem will be if he DOESN'T feel able to survive the end of the universe in his current situation.

0:33 "[Somewhere] in the Heavens... they are waiting". These are the first lines of Marathon.

0:38 Probably the strongest visual link to the franchise we have so far... because that's most likely a S'pht. This supports the general idea that the ship is of the Pfhor to some degree, although the S'pht have been liberated at this point. It is uncertain, however, to what degree this applied outside of the conflict in Marathon 2.

This is why Destiny 2 has had 1 new crucible map in 3 years, and -1 gambit map.
Edit: -2 gambit maps.

Bungie's art team is on a whole other level. The best in the business in creating beautiful worlds IMO.

I wasn't expecting Bungie to bring Marathon, of all things, back but hey I'm here for it

Bungie could’ve gone the doom route with marathon. Expand on the lore of the old games with good stories in a single player game. Maybe even show us the pov of the other alien species like the Phfor, I dunno. But instead they made a pvp based extraction shooter.

Somehow becoming an extraction shooter is a worse fate than being left alone for 27 years.

I got mixed feeling about this, i'm really glad Bungie is returning to their Mac era franchise, but from the looks of the trailer i think this Marathon game will be another PvE or PvP free to play multiplayer instead of classic FPS shooter with intricate AI and map Bungie used to create.

Taking an IP thats famous for a fantastic, complex story and turning it into a simple PvP event is more than disappointing.

Now that Bungie has the actual tech to do the Marathon universe justice... they decide to bring the franchise back in the very genre that hardly encourages any curiosity towards story or world: pvp extraction shooter! Thanks, I hate it.

Somewhere in the heavens, they are waiting…

People seem upset about it, but seeing as how Extraction shooters are currently known for being buggy, broken, janky messes, with CoD being the most functional so far, there's still a lot of room in the genre for someone to come along and innovate the formula. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

I love destiny and halo and bungee always makes their shooters feel great to play. I can’t wait to try this

I'm so glad this franchise is coming back. It's been nearly 27 years since Marathon Infinity, and I'm so glad they're revitalizing this universe. 😍

I have waited for this nearly 20 years.

Resurrecting a long dead SP series only to turn it into another pvp battleroyale/extraction live service game in an already oversaturated market. God, how I hate this industry.

This looks so cool, I just wish it was singleplayer.

"Marathon is designed from the start as a PvP-focused game and won't have a single-player campaign."
