GCSE Biology - Aerobic & Anaerobic Respiration

Aerobic Respiration
This type of respiration only takes place when there is a steady and plentiful flow of oxygen to the living cells within the body. As all cells in the body require oxygen in order to convert glucose (sugar) into energy, long periods of exercise rely on aerobic respiration to keep the body performing at its optimum level. Football players rely on aerobic respiration in order to continue running around the pitch.

Anaerobic Respiration
Any type of exercise where the muscles are not being supplied with enough oxygen in order to sustain long periods of exercise is called anaerobic respiration. Sprinters use this type of respiration for their short bursts of exercise however as this type of respiration releases lactic acid into the muscles (a mild poison that induces fatigue) it is definitely not a sustainable form of respiration.
