Pardon a rant: confirmation bias is one of the worst aspects of human psychology. When people want to believe they're right, especially about shared beliefs or those core to their identities, even when they're most certainly factually wrong, they'll look for proof to affirm their beliefs in the worst places, while ignoring contradictory evidence from known-reputable sources. Sadly, the internet has developed echo chambers to reinforce this, and that is what's dividing us more than anything else.
