Dr O'Donovan explains 7 key signs of Vitamin B12 deficiency (including real clinical photos) including angular chelitis (stomatitis), glossitis, mouth ulcers, diarrhoea, pigmentation of the hands and nails, jaundice + more.

Symptoms of vitamin B12 or folate deficiency can include:

- extreme tiredness
- a lack of energy
- pins and needles (paraesthesia)
- a sore and red tongue
- mouth ulcers
- muscle weakness
- disturbed vision
- psychological problems, which may include depression and confusion
problems with memory, understanding and judgement.

When to see a GP!

See a GP if you think you may have a vitamin B12 or folate deficiency.
These conditions can often be diagnosed based on your symptoms and the results of a blood test.
It's important for vitamin B12 or folate deficiency anaemia to be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.
This is because although many of the symptoms improve with treatment, some problems caused by the condition can be irreversible.

Good summary of early symptoms, thank you.

Just a little point, B2 (Riboflavin) deficiency can also be a cause of Angular Cheilitis.

Thank you so much for this generous video
I would like you to clarify something about the pigmentation on the hands, is it topic pigmentation or below the skin? My mom had occasional darkening under the skin of her hands - palms and finger - and they went without treatment. Her gastro doctor noticed that mom had pale eylid membrane. Now she is undergoing a colonoscopy beacause her stool analysis results showed an amount of fungi and her doctor wants to make sure she doesn't have candida. Can B12 deficiency be a cause of intestinal fungi or a result of? Thanks a million, doctor🙏

Dr. O'Donovan, I have had high B12 levels for awhile now. My last blood work showed 2000 as my b12 level. Is my body not absorbing this vitamin? I don't supplement, I am tired and achy. Would B12 injections be recommended if the intrinsic factor is missing?

I got diagnosed with a vitamin B12 deficiency today. I have fibromyalgia and thought it was a flare up as many symptoms are the exact same. Had a very hot feeling in my mouth for months. Starting tablets for 3 months from today. Thank you for the informative film and wishing you all the best with your medical career.

What causes the deficiency please? I'd prefer to get to the bottom of this as despite probiotics, fasting, bile salts and many other things I still have symptoms.

I was undiagnosed for my entire life, always fighting strange symptoms and physicians saying it was nothing.
Then in 2017 I went back to the hospital/college and started all over endoscopies & Colonoscopies; blood exams and due my symptoms they decided I have pernicious anemia due the Atrophic gastritis and now a Neuro Endochrine Tumor, I use injections of B12, I got low levels of acid in my stomach, I cannot eat fresh onions, cannot eat or drink anything that's too acid.
I suffer constant nausea, sometimes my stomach hurts and it solves with Omeprazole only, last year in December I hit the point of collapse due my thyroid hormones were too high (I use them daily), iron in my blood was extremely low, had fatigue, extreme sweat, my heart was pounding, I had brain fog, shortness of breath all because the megaloblastic anemia, it almost gave me a bed in hospital, Mt dosage of thyroid hormones were lowed, I needed endovenous iron, and three Citoneurin injections, plus other things.
Exams in January/2022 by tomography shows negative and crystalized cysts on my lungs, liver and kidneys, and I always wanted to be an organ donor...
Now I am in three different ambulatories (Oncology, Gastroenterologist that evaluate my symptoms and prescribe medicines and exams, and the team of Gastroenterologists who perform the endoscopies) I never used drugs, never used cigarettes or abuse of alcohol.
My grandfather, une and mom had cancer in the digestive system.
I take care of myself, all alone as the tumor I have is indolent, and there's no chemo for it, only surgery/ operation if it turns to be a cancer.
Had headaches for.my entire life, low immunity and so on
Take care of yourselves, please!

Most physicians don't pay attention to the symptoms, but is my body, I live in it and I know when something is awfully wrong.

I landed up in the hospital with low B12. Had blood transfusion plus after released 4 hr drip treatments of meds in my arm. Breathing probs also. After getting well I make sure I take B12 vitamin every day. Wise to get cbc blood test periodically to CK all levels.

My utube feed has an enlightened consciousness. There it is... sends me this video from an ( to me) unknown channel, discussing the very symptoms I developed last 4 weeks🤗👏👏👏

I didn't have any of these signs at all. I was sent to hospital as I was vomiting and had diarrhoea and ataxia. No GP had ever checked eyes or mouth and I had lost 4 stone in 4 months, 16 to 12 stone, coming off prednisolone from polymyalgia rheumatica. With my doctors it was just check one thing at a time, nothing holistic.
Omeprazole was the cause, damaging my intrinsic factor apparently, diagnosed after 5 nights in hospital on a drip.
I'm a Coeliac, with psoriasis and currently lymphoedema, only being diagnosed with the former at the age of 65 after stomach problems all my life leading to depression for which I was early retired. No depression without gluten. . I'm now 80 and off meds as I don't trust doctors anymore.

A few months ago I was prescribed Vit B12 because I take Metformin. I received a text message from the pharmacist at my GP surgery saying that those taking Metformin needed it because Vit B12 was affected by the drug.
