Explore the Diving Bell Ship!

Показать описание
Losing precious cargo or equipment at sea doesn't always mean it's gone forever, thanks to diving bell ships designed for such recoveries. These ships, currently patrolling Germany's Rhine River, use an innovative method to retrieve lost items. A shaft lowers a chamber to the seabed, where air compressors then expel water, exposing the riverbed and allowing workers to retrieve items without getting wet. Workers acclimate in a pressurized cabin before descending to the chamber. These ships, like the Carl Straat and its successor Archimedes, operate at depths up to 10 meters, performing various tasks including maintenance, cargo retrieval, and even removing unexploded ordnance. Despite seeming futuristic, diving bell technology dates back to 1535 with Guglielmo de Lorena's explorations, now scaled up for modern use.
