Umms & Ahhs Come From A Lack of Confidence

If you say umm & ahh, it's most likely because you're not fully confident in what you're saying.

An unusual hack to remove umms & ahhs from your speech is to look more confident when you speak by using bigger body language. When you look more confident... you'll feel more confident... and then you'll sound more confident

I'm going to remember this. You also get confidence from practice.

Now I understood why I was feeling so confident when I was giving speech at my college because my posture was more confident through which I looked confident and felt confident and I delivered a great speech.

My ROTC teacher when we were speaking and said "uh or um" would repeat it every single time so ive stopped doint it. I also had a manager when i was in my awkward phase who helped me with eye contact. He'd ask me a question and I'd look away to think of an answer or something and he'd say "don't look over there look at me." Helped a lot

that's true
as a wise man once said that "fake confidence and real confidence is the same confidence"

you stop the umms and the ahhs, wanting to sound better, you trick yourself to be confident and learn to pace yourself, you speak concisely and rather than having subpar results, people listen to you relatively attentively, it feeds your confidence, you start speaking even more confidently.

Confidence upwards spiral :D

I don't feel confident when I stand in pulpit stand but when I don't stand in pulpit and free to move my body feel more comfortable.

I knew it had something to do with confidence. There are a lot of people that always add "and um" before resuming their sentence. It's pretty annoying.

What makes you confident? The looks. Thus clothing.

Sorry, but that is simply false. Usually, the whole discussion about confidence in many psychological areas is very wishy washy. There are theories that suggests that confidence is not actually a feeling, rather a hallucination by the bulk mass of society since every person has their own insecurities, no matter who he or she may be. Therefore, these theories suggest that confidence is something attributed to us by other people - mostly through the halo effect.

Personally, I don't know anyone who said that someone is insecure because of saying too much umms and uhhs. The attribution of insecurity in these situations come from other factors which are actual signs of discomfort and nervosity like a shaky voice for example.

Yes, listening to people who say a lot of umms and uhhs is perceived as that person having a bad habit and being annoying to listen to, but that does not make them be perceived as "less confident", only makes them be perceived as not as superbly high-leveled on the communication skill scale.

Elon Musk, probably still one of the richest men on the planet says a lot of umms and uhhs while still displaying a calm manner while speaking and therefore gets perceived as confident because extremely high communication skills are not his priority in his role.

This however is different in politicians and presidents where their communication skills are the main measurement of their position in the hierarchy. Therefore, saying a lot of umms and uhhs in that case could make you seem less competent and therefore less confident.
