John knows the theory and the feel is even more fun.

But the fact that he knows the theory (scales) he can interpret what the line is and apply it to various situations. All lines need to be transposed to all keys. When you know where the notes are in the scale/chord it becomes much easier to transpose it because the scale degrees used will be the same in every key. Also note that he said "when I heard someone {else} play it". That underscores the need to transcribe other people's solos and take lines from them. Even someone as good as John still listens to and copies others to enhance his own playing. All of this is important stuff.

These guys who are so deep into theory always come off as the least interesting players to me. Geddy Lee couldnt tell you what anything means that john mentions in this vid. more interesting writer and player though. There is NOTHING more important than feel as a musician.
