The new Toyota Mirai is VERY different to the old one. But is the world now ready for mass uptake of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles? And what actually is a HFCV/FCEV and how does it work?! Watch to find out.

Would you buy a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle? 🤔

The challenge of hydrogen vehicles is how to produce it in a clean and economic way. Hydrolisis as per today takes lots of energy, that same energy could be used for electric cars and you'd save 60% more.
The only future for hydrogen I see is for big transportation: lorries, ships, planes, ...

If given the public knowledge about hydrogen is limited, caring about something you may not even know about -it's hard to convince this is the future for personal and public transportation.

Go Hydrogen!!!

Never going to work for passenger cars. The infrastructure required is prohibitive. But perhaps it is the answer for large trucks that fuel up at a depot.

I would definitely buy one if it’s develop a bit more with more stations the prices will come down as well and the cars price will come down too .

I think this is the future especially for commercial vehicles. The government need to get the refuelling network set up ASAP. Battery electric is not an option for HGV & PSV vehicles and once the hydrogen network is in place I will buy a fuel cell vehicle.

Will definitely get one of these if there is at least feasible infrastructure for refuelling these cars. Right now, owning these hydrogen cars is like owning a phone without a home with regular electricity supply. What’s the point?

Japan is rightfully investing in this technology.
Because after oil, the rare earth elements of battery vehicles will become the next oil.
Japan and South Korea have worked on getting hydrogen power locomotive and trucks

Hydrogen has a place in the energy mix, particularly for heavy commercial transport, shipping & possibly aircraft, but for passenger cars & light vans it's suboptimal. Infrastructure, safety & environmental impact of H production are the key issues.

I thought this car would be a great contender in this Hydrogen Fuel Cell field but it's sad to see the infrastructure not being developed as well as the cars. There's a great focus of electric cars which is good but I think the world really needs this power train, with the infrastructure to accommodate it and frankly decent cars to interest people away from their Teslas. I liked the concept but I don't like this final production model. Tesla's aging Model S looks far better and is practical - I really think Toyota should've made a car that could real people in. Kind of like how Electric cars do for speed freaks. I thought they were done designing boring cars.

I can see the advantages of a hydrogen car, as opposed to an EV, but the cost and lack of H stations are a huge disadvantage,

I don’t see the point? H2 isn’t freely available so has to be made using energy. That energy has to come from somewhere. Sure, it can come from solar and wind. But then why waste energy converting it to H2 when you can just use that electric in an electric car, one that you can charge at home every night.

The video title is incorrect because the Mirai is a fuel cell electric vehicle. Hydrogen can be used in an internal combustion engine or in a fuel cell. Hence the Mirai FCEV is an alternative to a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) while both are EVs.

I would definitely buy one as it is environmentally better than fossil electric but it needs to develop an effective network, reduce the hydrogen price and improve/evolve the vehicles. At least it's started!

So that Hydrogen filling station makes its own but as I understand it most (95%) Hydrogen comes from natural gas currently. Also the down-time of the hydrogen filling stations seems pretty poor, both in terms of how long it takes to fill a number of vehicles and them being operational.

Would make more sense to me to have more electric chargers. There is a rapid charger out there now that has its own battery storage and only needs a 7kW connection.

Excellent review. All the details are accurate. Good job.

I would if hydrogen station was near where I live

As a caravanner I really want this technology to improve and to catch-on, because I can't imagine the hassle involved in making a 300+ mile journey towing a caravan with an EV. Unfortunately there's not much I like about this particular model, and it's certainly not the answer yet because it has a maximum towing weight of 0kg!

Dont understand the fuel fob thing, why must you use that? Why not fill up go in and pay as per the norm

Out of interest, when using the hydrogen filling station, can you only 'fill until full', or can you specify in advance a maximum cost or weight of gas?
