A introduction to hybrids with Petrol Ped

We've been filming with EVs for a few years now, but what about hybrids? Are they a good first step when it comes to switching to an EV?

We decided to ask at expert and who better than Petrol Ped. With over 200k subscribers to his YouTube Channel, he knows a thing or two!

Loved making this with Philippa. The edit turned out really well. Next time I'll get you in a supercar 😜👍

Did I just wake up from a coma, because it's like 7 year old me watching Tomorrow's World on BBC1 after school in the 90s and getting an explanation of what's actually happening with vehicles in the 21st century! Tomorrow's world was my gateway drug into engineering, inspired by you.

Phev's should be measured in two ways - how many miles can it run on electric only and once battery is depleted how many mpg does it do as a hybrid.

8:30 I had a Niro PHEV for a year between EVs, due to my drive profile 80% of all my driving was electric through the year. But I did do a run from Yorkshire down to Slovenia in it and I can tell you the "true" MPG of that car when the battery was depleted (and just using the 15% hybrid reserve) was between 55-65MPG reported by the car and that's doing 130 KM on the adaptive cruise on the Autobahn. We started each day of the trip with a full battery (as we chose places to stay on the way down that could charge) and then in Slovenia we granny charged at our Airbnb every day so most of the driving in Slovenia was EV. A great experience, but really a rare once a year "need" for the hybrid system to do that journey. However this summer I'm driving a 64kWh Soul EV down to Croatia, so pretty much doing the same journey and I have zero concerns about the journey thanks to the ubiquity of chargers and most Tesla chargers in Europe being able to be used by non Teslas.

How nice to hear a sensible, well reasoned and productive discussion re all the pluses and minuses of each propulsion system.
Well done @PetrolPed and Philippa. 👏
Getting away from the usual territorial arguments was a pleasant change. As you mentioned, there are different benefits for different situations, but the bit the particular gets me is the fact that new vehicle prices for any system are now beyond most pockets as an outright purchase, without subsidies and financing.
It then concerns me as to the perceived value, as its all to easy to price a vehicle up by many thousands when the purchaser never actual finishes paying for it.
People have different needs, different budgets and situations, so lets embrace the choices rather than argue them. Well done 😊

I think when she asked “how big is the battery pack” what she really wanted to know is ‘relative to handbag size’ 😅

Thank you both for a straightforward review. Very interesting indeed ! I currently drive a mild-hybrid Golf, and hope my next car will be a full hybrid, Toyota fashion. Cheers, Tom

Having had both EV and PHEV, a PHEV is the car for EV drivers with towing needs. For other uses it is difficult to justify an ICE car over EV unless your are the genuine person who does the 1000km journey very regularly.

What about mining for the battery precious metals required to produce the vehicle

Come on PP, EVs already used for a lot of public transport and heavy haulage.
