How to Upload Your Family Tree to FamilySearch.org

Learn how to upload your family tree to FamilySearch and have total control over it using a Gedcom file. This video is a result of a blog post I saw on FamilySearch. So, I thought I would create a video to demonstrate how it works.

FamilySearch is and will always be free to use. For years, its users have complained about other people changing their ancestor’s information in the one worldwide collaborative FamilySearch tree. So, when I saw this article about having total control over your own tree, I had to investigate. Using this method, you can preserve your family history without anyone changing it.
In this video I demonstrate downloading trees using two different services as an experiment to see if the images and documents would transfer from Ancestry to FamilySearch. Then I did one from MyHeritage. See the video for the results.

Thank you so much for this, Connie! I am so tired of going into FamilySearch to find that someone has given my grandma another husband. They won't (or maybe can't?) remove the other man. She was only ever married to my grandpa. So frustrating. I look forward to putting a tree there that I can control, with no interlopers. :) Thanks also for the tip about researching in the Genealogies section. Have a blessed day.

Connie, awesome video by they love all your videos you definitely given me a lot of tips and currently using the tip on cluster groups in Ancestry that you posted...definitely gives me better perspective then from other videos I have watch. Ok my quest for you on this video is once you download say from Ancestry and upload to Family Search can you get the Family Search records to go into the gedcom you uploaded into Family Search. Just curious 🤔. Thanks
Cindy

Great tip! I had no idea the GEDCOM could be downloaded nor that there is info in other genealogies that has not been added to the shared tree. Thanks!

That's the tutorial I needed. Thank you! I plan to add my ancestors to the world family tree, it will take some time but it looks easy enough.

Great information today, thank you! It was very easy to do.

My understanding is that adding a Gedcom file into Family Tree only adds it for the general public, for research purposes. It does not actually add it to a personal family tree, like you do in MyHeritage. For example, I followed your steps, uploaded the Gedcom to FamilyTree, but there is not way to see my data in a TREE format at all. When I go over and click TREE, it is still empty. So, this is a great method for sharing your research with others, but it does not save an individual having to start from scratch and rebuild a tree if I'm moving for the first time from MyHeritage to FamilySearch.

Thank you for this cool video. Now i understand the world tree better. Is it possible to have an family tree view for genealogies without adding them to the world tree?

Once uploaded, do I have to manually add each individual to my own family tree?

Only problem I’m having is when I click family tree I don’t see anything. Do I still have to build a tree on family search?

I figured out early in my use of FamilySearch that I could upload a GEDCOM and took a while to get the hang of the world tree idea. Looking at other people's uploaded trees helped me with crucial parts of building my own and documenting enough to add to the public tree.

The Gedcom upload takes a really long time. Is it supposed to be like that?

Help, my brain hurts, lol. How do I view a GEDCOM file that someone has added as a "source/reference"? My ancestors have been incorrectly changed and duplicated. Please tell me the "time" on this video if this is question is addressed. Thank you.

so we have to sit there and match 3000 entries, why doesnt it just import it like other gedcom compatible sites

If you upload your ancestry tree to FamilySearch does your ancestry tree still remain on the ancestry site?
