People infatuated with conspiracies should read Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum"... despite a work of fiction, I don't think I've ever seen a work that explains how people become obsessed with conspiracies better than that book. "Ma gavte la nata!"

Pretty much with that "secret knowledge", I could go into talking about my Dad's hording and only realizing it was a problem ~6 months before he died at age 62. He finally realized that was a barrier to loved ones, that was after ~20 years of us having been taken away from the state, and he was mostly alone because no one could come visit him. He wasn't unintelligent in many things, but we all have things we think we know more than others. Some very detrimental to ourselves and others.

Granted, I haven't broken down the whole argument like Dr. Grande, but I have given thought about this. It is largely personality based, and many conspiracy theories would also break down because of personalities at the same time.

My question is how much of it is personality based, how much of it is mental illness, and how much of it is exploitation of a vulnerable sector of the population. And what are the protections against the latter two as well.
