The global Steam store has apparently been banned in China, according to sources. It would appear that the China-only Steam store is still online... but it only has 103 CCP approved games available. OUCH.

Good. Now the game devs don't have to ban these hackers themselves.

And that is why a lot of chinese game companies are "fleeing" the country.

It's scary to think how many people want the US government to have that level of power. Though, this isn't to say it's terribly far from it.

Guess that means our games won't need to be tailored to the Chinese market and censorship.
About goddamn time.

This isn't a surprise. There's a channel that informs news about China, and from what's revealed the guy in charge of Ccp is currently in the middle of a power struggle. Said struggle involves cutting off the money from his rivals by cracking down on the gaming sector which they run and operate

I'm surprised they had a Steam. Even more so that it took em this long to ban it.

This is great for the rest of the world, now gaming companies can stop its insane obsession with courting the imaginary Chinese market that doesn't exist. This is a a wonderful Christmas gift for everyone outside of China.

If I was a game dev I wouldn't bother trying to get my games in China

"But, but, but we censored all the games for them?? How could they do this to us"

Prepare to see a “sanitized” ripoff of every game on regular steam on the chinese version of the store.

This is the reason why anime will never take off in China

I'm surprised they still allow RPG Maker, what if you use that to make a game they wouldn't approve of?

If you want something interesting to look into, I was trying to find an art tablet to buy and noticed many reviews mentioned having computer issues with the drivers of Chinese-made art tablets. So I browsed around a bit and read how there might be spyware in all of these art tablets coming out of China. I really didn't want to pay more for a Wacom, but I might consider it now.

All their esport gamers are going to rebel.

It's just a matter of time before this move hits China's financial bottom line, and in a real way too. They're going to dance around it indefinitely, but these "leaders" will eventually have to choose between total global isolation or lowering the barriers. In all honestly, I'm betting on the first, with predictable consequences inside and out!

Getting banned from China benefits everyone besides the top executives who want a larger bonus. The sooner companies become independent from China, the better.

(And the people in China, but that’s self inflicted)

Now we won't have to deal with Taiwanese developers bending the knee

As soon as Steam made a China exclusive version, China banning regular Steam was an obvious choice. This actually hurts localizers of Japanese games since a decent bulk of their Steam sales came from China.
