Update to the update on the "ban": there's now reports that the DNS cache explanation is wrong and there's some kind of throttling being applied to steam. I think this is 'less good' - but its still not fully explained. But again, it still doesn't matter unless regulators actually notice skins and trading.

Update on the "ban" - its apparently due to a DNS Cache Poisoning attack possibly related to the Winter Sale (be aware that this isn't officially confirmed though and currently just something people are repeating on social media). So it especially changes nothing in this case and will hopefully be rolled back. And hopefully skins continue to be ignored by the authorities, its only a billion dollar industry which is tiny in the grand scheme of things.

When I was in china last year, Steam was working, all the community features (including the market and store) were not working without a vpn. Might depend on the region, I was in Shanghai and Suzhou, but it definitely wasn't fully functional no matter what some websites that check the "blocked status" might say.

Can confirm. Chinese American living in China atm. The "international" version no longer works, there's no front page, csgo cannot launch. Community features (market, workshop, etc) and inventory/profile no longer work, they didn't work before without a VPN anyways. There are other platforms for playing csgo within China though, so it's not so bad on the gaming side.

I believe this is a long time coming policy against gaming for minors in China. Started in summer this year, for many games (mobile and PC), you need to have a valid government ID # to register, and minors under 18 are restricted to 1 hour of gaming on weekdays, cannot log in after 9. And 3 hours of gaming on the weekends.

Shouldn't affect the skins market too much imo, China welcomes foreign capital.

2:34 i'm an average chinese gamer, and i can confirm all gamers in china have vpn, some have proper vpn and some others have something called 'accelerator' which is a kind of vpn dedicated to gaming to reduce lags, so in terms of skin prices i don't think it's gonna affect a lot, because in china you already need a vpn to send trade offers anyway, steamcommunity was banned three years ago

There can be two outcomes, either price will crash high because demand will be very low as other countries rarely invest in high tier items and open cases . or price me go super high for a while as supply will be very low as majority csgo investors inventory will have no sell option and major site buffff might shut down which will drastically increase the price ., hope for the good . ;)
