what is the mathmatical proof of raising the negative being a reciprocal?

Why does the negative exponent have such a weird rule. To me it's like telling someone that you can put a dollar in a vending machine, and get a bag of potato chips. But how did the potato chips get there. Most people know how potato chips are made, but I might have a hard time remembering these rules if I don't understand why it happens. I could be thinking too much. Should I try to think of math as if it is a secret code or something?
