"Would pokemon really be as good as it is today if megas were the only feature and returned every single generation?"

Yes. Pokemon would be a lot better than how it is today.

This implies the whole Dynamaxing and gimmicks they’ve introduced since Megas have been good. In contrast, they’re one of the main reasons I’ve checked out of the main series games. I was just fine with the “same old battle system” for 15 years or so, and Megas were the peak of that. Not everything needs to be revolutionized for the next generation, to the point where its hardly recognizable as what it once was in the past. That’s my biggest gripe, is that Megas felt like realistic additions to the lore and worldbuilding, but nah, let’s just make em Godzilla sized now for some reason. Pokemon has lost its way.

I just wish we could use Megas in the post game in the new games cause of how cool they were.

It seems you've completely forgotten about triple and rotation battle mechanics in gen5. Also what is to decide which mechanics are going to be kept and scrapped in the next gen?

2:55 Gen 2 added the Steel and Dark types, gen 3 added double battles, gen 5 added Tripple and rotation battles (weird that people don’t complain about this gimmick being removed). So no, it’s not like nothing was ever added to the battling system before megas.

"Before generation 6, the only new thing that was ever added to a Pokémon game was the Pokémon & a region."
If we are specifically discussing battle mechanics here, this comment is very disingenuous & blind sighted.

Gen 2 introduced 2 new types (Steel, Dark), Held Items, weather conditions & an actual special attack/defence split.
Gen 3 introduced abilities, double battles & a new weather condition (Hail).
Gen 4 introduced the physical/special split for individual moves.
Gen 5 introduced triple battles & rotation battles (the weakest addition).

New types, held items, abilities, weather conditions, physical/special split & double battles have considerably affected Pokémon battles and kept the series from going stale for all these years.
Your comment implies we have been using gen 1 mechanics until mega evolution was introduced.

Mega Charizard X/Y and Salamence were too damn strong. Only way to counter was with my mega Gengar back in the day.

I don’t think Gamefreak has completely removed Megas, but rather postpone them. One reason why I think this is because of Ash’s Lucario mega evolving in the Sword and Shield anime. There’s also the fact that megas are also in Go. In my opinion, Gamefreak “removed” mega evolution so that they could later on “bring them back” with a likely predatory subscription price. The Pokémon company knows how popular mega evolution is, and they will monetize it to the max.

Tbh id rather have mega evolution than have tera. Its just better.

Turning Mega Evolutions into regular Evolutions, would be cool.

Okay while I get that they were trying to make thing “different” for all the gens post-mega evolution, I feel like they went the wrong direction. People weren’t mad about the pokemon formula, and mega evos brought out the best of pokemon battles, which were the pokemon themselves. Instead of focusing on gimmicks I think it would be better if they put a more significant effort into the story (like B/W) and maybe added more subplots/sidequests to help with immersion

I wanted Mawile to get an evolution before it got a Mega, because its stats are awful. The Mega was essentially the one way it was able to stay relevant, but now it can't get an evolution since it has Mega, which has long since been abandoned. Unless they do the logical thing (which they no doubt feel is wrong in their eyes) and just give it an evolution despite previously having a Mega.

Though knowing GAME FREAK, they'd probably just give it a regional variant with its own exclusive evolution, which would be cool, but depressing for the OG Mawile who gets stuck with literally nothing since its Mega was the only thing keeping it strong relevant at the time. At the very least give Mawile's BST a big buff to be at least almost on par with its Mega stats.

I mean they didn’t make any new megas for Sun and Moon but they was still there. Creating even more new ones would make sense for an X and Y remake.

I always wondered why Mega’s were not a thing anymore and this explains it perfectly 😊

I like Megas and giving new designs to mons, but I do have a problem with the mons that get chosen and the 100 BST buff.
And in terms of actual battle, Terrastilozation is by far my favourite.

I doubt that is the reason. If they are afraid that there would be too many megas, then why did they introduce z moves, dynamax and terra types. Every pokemon can do them which contradicts this argument. They did it because they don't want to make new designs every gen. It's easier to just "make them big" or "give them a hat"

Tera, Dyna, Giga and Zmoves can be used by every pokemon unlike megas that can only be used by 20 or so pokemon (of all the 700+ pokemon that existed back then). Seriously, how can that be even remotely good?
Side note, funny that the 3ds could handle 800+ pokemon but the Switch apparently can’t according to GF…

I would argue that Megas aren't super great. They were cool at first but kind of meh

They should have every pokemon and every "gimmick" [megastar, double, triple, z move ...]
