For everyone else that don't understand what his going on, if the take-up wheel spin fast that does not always mean, the tape his eaten, it his a fail safe just in-case megnetic tape spil out of the housing, so the take-up reel spin faster to attempt to catch-up with the spil out tape, in this case it could not do it because when the take-up wheel spin that fast you saw the broken piece inside the cassette spin around.

cassette tape moves not by the spindles you see, these are just to spool the tape and keep it tidy. The movement is done by the capstan and pinch roller. The capstan is the metal spinning pin close to the head.
If your cassette player is dirty and by dirt your capstan is becoming sticky, it will eat up your tape. Clean your tape heads and capstan now and then with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud to prevent this.

I still have many of those Audio Magnetics cassettes I used in the 70s but I'm afraid to play them because of what happens here.

Looks like the leader splice failed right when the actual magnetic part of the tape passed through the capstan/pinch roller.

That’s sad. I hope maybe you should fix it and get to play again. This is a really old “Type 0” cassette made by Audio Magnetics, and the shell is welded, but it has some life to it.

@Gabe's YT: When I look again the reason why the take-up reel spin that fast was because the tape got caught in the pinch roler, my getting miss align, from suddenly falling more into place because you did not place the cassette all the way in initially.

It looks like the capstain turns too slow or the wrong way

I have the same problem with my cassette deck snapping tapes. I’m guessing it would be faulty pinch rollers?

Does this matter for old tape or old tape players?

Good quality equipment doesn’t ruin tapes.
This player isn’t a good quality tape deck, it’s cheap crap. The tape isn’t good quality, it’s old cheap brand cassette. Heads & rollers need regular cleaning.
