Nice video! I'm a former 10 year student of Joe Morello's and appreciate what you are doing with this video. I'm in no way being critical, but would just like to pass along some of Joe's advice to me. That left foot chick should be strong and definite to keep the band locked in. Play each downbeat on the ride slightly accented. Make sure to keep that right hand ride triplet feel circular or swung. Don't flatten it out so it sounds like straight up-and-down 8ths and 16ths. Joe would give this exercise to help develop that circular swing - rll rlr rll rlr. Play this pattern as 8th note triplets to equal 1 bar in 4/4. It can be played on the pad or between the snare and ride. Regarding the grip - it doesn't matter. Joe would ofter say that matched grip makes more sense than traditional. The grip and stroke motion are identical when using the matched grip. Maybe it would be cool to follow this video up with a comping video and basic fills with accents that lead into the next section of the song. 'Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer' is a great book to learn jazz independence. Keep up the great work and videos!!!!

Haha you say you're not a jazz drummer, and then you play very nicely with a light touch around the entire kit. Could've fooled me!
Nice lesson, man. Well done☺

I´d say jazz is a good practise for any drummer. It can improve everything. Don´t forget Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich and all other incredible drummers that was "before". Just copy Rich´s one hand drumroll. :D Great lesson and a great reminder! Also, many great drummers in other music genres used the "jazz grip". It is still very important if you play the snare in a marching band.

I know this is very off topic, but I noticed the tattoo on your right wrist and I had to ask, was bioshock the inspiration behind it?

One thing that beginners rarely do correctly, that you didn't cover, is how to play the ride cymbal. Not the pattern of notes, but the technique to play the notes with a good feel. Of course, everyone does it a little differently - Elvin Jones often accented the skip notes, for example - but beginners often have difficulty feeling jazz on 2 and 4, and it's reflected in how they play the ride, playing quick downstrokes on 1 and 3, which results in more of a march-like feel. "Throw" the stick on 2 and 4, and "collect" the stick on 1 and 3, as John Riley would say. I like to think of it as a kind of up and downstroke thing.

i didn't know Paiste was pronounced like that. I've been saying it wrong for decades
08:14 you might be wrong on that one :)

I was wondering if you would. And, of course, you did. I'm referring to the fact you're covering playing jazz and so you, like so many others, seem to assume that because of that, the only way to play the snare is with traditional grip. This is SOOOO wrong! There's no valid reason to use trad grip when playing jazz, so, unless you learned to play that way originally, just use your normal, matched grip.

There are many great jazz drummers who don't use traditional who are recognized as some of the top drummers in their field. You may have guessed I'm not a fan of it and don't use it at all. It's the most unnatural position to put your hand in, a bit like self-inflicted torture. Anybody picking up a pair of drum sticks for the first time would NEVER naturally pick them up that way.

I'm glad to see you switch to your usual matched grip at one point. I can't say for certain but I imagine that's the position that's most comfortable for you since, until now, that's all I've seen you use in your videos. So why try to "look cool" when just playing that style has more than enough coolness factor in it already? Be even cooler and stick to matched.

Jazz by definition comes with built-in cool!

P.S. Other than that, nice lesson by the way.

Not a jazz player my ass😂 You are highly underrated as a drummer. You actually made me want to channel my inner Buddy Rich (Danny Carey inspired me to buy drums, looking back Buddy vs Animal when I was 45 some years younger made me want to play them) that I've been suppressing because jazz seemed really really complicated based on other videos I've watched on the subject. Hope that makes sense... As always, thanks for the lesson. Looking forward to the website. Cheers.
