Terry Chandler, a master hunter and president of the National German Shorthaired Pointer Club, talks about the breed he loves. Dogumentary TV caught up with Terry at a Field Test in California City, California.

The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) is a medium to large sized breed of dog developed in the 19th century in Germany for hunting. A versatile hunting breed, being an all-purpose gun breed of dog suitable for both land and water, it is streamlined yet powerful with strong legs that make it able to move rapidly and turn quickly. It has moderately long floppy ears set high on the head. Its muzzle is long, broad, and strong, allowing it to retrieve even heavy game. The dog's profile should be straight or strongly Roman nosed; any dished appearance to the profile is incorrect. The eyes are generally brown, with darker eyes being desirable; yellow or "bird of prey" eyes are a fault. The tail is commonly docked, although this is now prohibited in some countries[3]. The correct location for docking for a GSP is after the caudal vertebrae start to curl, leaving enough tail to let the dog communicate through tail wagging and movement.[citation needed] The docked tail should not be too long or too short but should balance the appearance of the head and body. The GSP tail is carried at a jaunty angle, not curled under. When the GSP is in classic point stance, the tail should be held straight out from the body, forming a line with the pointing head and body. Like all German pointers, GSPs have webbed feet. They are known for going after water fowl in the water. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a member of the Sporting Group.

I honestly can't imagine how my 20's would have looked like without my GSP.
I got Maggie at age 22 (now 29) and she got me through college, breakups, depression and getting fit again. The smartest, funniest, most loving and loyal dog I ever met, and I had dogs all my life.

I’m 52 and have hunted all my life, and never hunted with a shorthair until yesterday! My friend from Florida came up here to Central New York to do some pheasant hunting with me. He brought his shorthair. I never had so much fun hunting pheasants!! That dog was absolutely amazing! An absolute JOY to hunt with!!

These beautiful dogs are extremely agile. We once caught our female, bella, climbing the tree in our backyard

I love our GSP. She is the best dog. She needed 3 hours of running a day to remain balanced when she was young but now that she's 10, an hour a day is good, with a day or two off a week.

There was already a GSP in my family when I was born 65 years ago. This dog helped raise me. I have had this breed in my family ever since.
I've always believed that the German Shorthair is not for everyone. If you cannot spend a certain amount of time with, are short of patience, live in an apartment, or are just not an outdoors person, get something else. That said, breeders need to interview prospective owners to make sure the puppy is going into a proper home.

One of the best dogs I ever had! My male was 120lbs on the scale. One of the largest GSP’s I ever encountered. Lived 12+ years. Loyal and, faithful to his last moments.

Greetings from Germany! Sometimes i have my doubts if anyone who is not german could really handle a german hunting dog. But it is so good to see that you really have the right heart and understanding for the gshp!

Great video. I rescued one three years ago. I didn't now anything about the breed at the time, but I felt in love in a matter of seconds. He is my best companion and for me is the best dog and breed ever. I love him.

GSPs are easily the most popular hunting dogs in Australia for waterfowl and upland game. They are beautiful dogs that love to hunt and are great with families! Thank you for an awesome video :)

Having bird dogs you distill your life to a succession of short lives, each of them a dogs...from each you learn a little of the joy of living, observing his inexcusable enthusiasm (between naps), his eagerness that makes each day the more significant for being a day in a life so short. You watch the pup grow out of him as he becomes more serious, but there is always a good-natured disposition and his faith in you... There are people who have children in Hope of providing themselves with someone to be there in the end, for your dog, it is only you who are there When that time comes. A right thing, for it puts you in a position of doing something for him after he has done so much for you. ---George "bird" Evans
