Digimon Adventure (2020) Episode 1: Thoughts & Opinions | Billiam

I take a moment to give my reaction to the first episode of the Digimon Adventure reboot series, as well as my thoughts on upcoming Digimon news. While I liked the first episode a lot, I have a lot of reservations about where the series might go moving forward.

My expectations for this series went from "Tri again" to "cautiously optimistic" after watching the first episode. I did make an audible "what the fuck" when they showed "Next time: War Game" at the end of the episode.


They took what they learned from Applimonster and put it to work here.

My favorite scene of the original is where the parents and humans discovered the digimons i hope there is a scene like that

It seems like they're taking inspiration from a lot of different Digimon media when creating this. For example, the digital place where Agumon fights in the first episode doesn't seem to be the actual Digital World, but rather it's referred to as the "Net". It seems to be similar to Eden/Kowloon from the Cyber Sleuth games in both presentation and function, as an in-between realm connecting the real world to the Digital World, which still seems nature-y from the poster they've revealed. It also shares resemblances to the network from Our War Game where they fight Diaboromon.

Tai uses one Digimon as a flail and uses it to take down a couple other Digimon, and that’s rad.

I hadn't even considered the dark ocean in my overall excitement for this series, but that is an EXCELLENT point. This is the perfect opportunity to finally do something substantial with that plot thread

I was so hyped that they still kind of made T.K. and Kari the "special kids" in the opening, because everyone else just got a quick frame to show them and their digimon, but they made sure that those two got a more specialized animation at the beginning.

I also noticed early that it looked REALLY close to the original. When they first showed Kari, it genuinely just looked like a screenshot from Adventure 01

Kind of felt like Mega Man NT Warrior, where it focuses on how the digital world influences the regular world. I fear they may have abandoned the "digital world" idea, but I doubt that would really happen.

I'm personally ecstatic to see Tai's whole Courage deal come into play as why he arrives in the Digital World and how he makes Agumon more powerful. What felt like a macguffin now feels like an actual character component and I've always been super down for the humans doing more than nothing during fights.

"Our Wargame" is literally the title for episode 2.

This reimagining was the most refreshing experience I have ever had with Digimon since Digimon Tamers.
