Wow, powerful. D.A. Carson is a great teacher. I was at a theology conference years ago and he was a speaker along with Voddie Baucham and Joel Beeke. It was an awesome lineup.

I do agree with everything thing he said but we are also told to work out our salvation with fear and trembling.

The illustration also powerfully demonstrates the relationship between faith and obedience. But for the obedience of Smith and Brown in applying the blood, they would both have been missing a son the following morning.

Amen . . . I only relay on the precious and infinitely worth blood of the son of God.

John 17:8
Jesus says;
"For I have given them the words You gave Me, and they have received them. They knew with certainty that I came from You, and they believed that You sent Me."

Super good. Not sure why he had to attack the intensity of faith and compare that to the greater revelation of The Blood.
Also to note in Rev.
We overcome the beast by not fearing our life unto death, by the Blood of the Lamb; and to note, the Word of our testimony. But faith and the ferver thereof is SO vital and works in tandem. Abraham believed God with life and death; he believed so completely, his faith saved his son.
In this sermon, his example of those two men was accurate with the both doing the same act but with different hearts, and for that time and place it was as it reads with simple. Normally obedience often wins over passionate effort.. But remember the demon who kicked the man's butt doing exactly what the apostles were doing, but didn't really believe in his heart.
In conclusion.
So with that point, I see what he said. It is however my firm belief that his point has no business attacking faith to make it. The blood in the old was a shadow if the Blood in the New, and the new testament is literally Jesus revieling what faith and our own word can actually do.
"By your own words you will be justified and by your own words condemned" Jesus.
The Blood to us now is the most powerful tool in the working of faith. The full revelation of the atonement-the cleansing Blood of the Father reveal to us this river of endless mercy!!!!

Please do not misunderstand me, our salvation depends solely on the blood of Christ and Carson is right on this. Nevertheless he errs gravely by minimizing the importance of faith. In the Old Testament during the Passover the sacrifice was performed by men, the blood was posted at the door by men, and those that obeyed Moses instructions were saved. They all had some degree of faith and trust in God by following Moses instructions. In the New Testament the sacrifice is provided by God, the blood shed is from God and not an animal, the blood of Christ is not applied to the door of a house but to our own body and soul, and the application of the blood is performed by God himself and not man when he regenerates us and creates faith in us. So faith is paramount because it is through faith that we have access to his grace (blood shed for us), so as much as I agree on the paramount importance of the blood of Jesus in saving us, it does so through faith (Romans 3:25). Few are covered by the blood of Christ. Few are among are among the blessed whom God will not impute sin. Romans 4:8). And those people are the men of faith, something Carson fails to mention, as he does not mention how everybody in the Old Testament that had not the blood on the door of his house suffered loss of life in the family.
