What Is The Second Death?

Some people theorize that the second death, described in the book of Revelation, is in reality a second life, where bad people (or at least people of questionable character) go to learn all about Jesus. The only problem is, scripture calls death an enemy. Death--even figurative death--is oblivion. Thus, no one learns ANYTHING in death, not even in figurative death. This theory makes death a substitute for resurrection. Martin Zender hates it when that happens!

Mark 9:49 For "every one" shall be salted with FIRE. If one does not experience this Gehenna fire of dying to the flesh, they will be salted with this fire in the age to come, for as Christ says, "If I be lifted up (die on the cross) will draw (Gk: Drag) ALL MANKIND unto myself!" That's why God used a lake to symbolize their whole body (which symbolizes the body of sin) being immersed in LAKE of fire. We are presently experiencing the Second Death by dying to the flesh daily. The Second Death is a death to the flesh of sin not annihilation, not torture, etc.

Question: If "death and hades" are thrown into the Lake of Fire (the second death), wouldn't THAT be 'the death of death'? To cancel the other out, as it were. And, what would be the purpose of "the fire" if it indeed it has no relevance or even has no connection with our God being "a consuming fire"? Actually that was 2 questions ;)

@zendermeister It really all amounts to how one interprets the book of Revelation. To me it is a very figurative book. I've heard you use the statement "literal if posible". Forgive me if I interpret that wrong, but to me, it doesn't do justice to all the types of lanuage in the bible. For example parables can be taken literally or figuratively, yet Jesus said parables are said so people WILL NOT UNDERSTAND THEM. Therefore the literal understanding is false for parables.

Martin...Can you please explain what 1 Cor 3:15, Mark 9:49, Matt 3:11 mean and especially why 1 Cor 3:15, Mark 9:49 speaks of everyman being purified by fire? Do you believe this will ever happen? and if so when?

I always thought it was eye opening when Jesus said, "Let the dead bury the dead."

But speaking to death always being bad, what did Paul mean when he said, "To die is gain, to live is Christ?"

Why don't you consider the 2nd death as another TYPE of death, a beneficial one? Just as it is "putting to death misdeeds of the body by the Spirit". That "putting to death" results in life, right? If the 1st death of mankind was spiritual (followed by physical), why you think the 2nd death must be the same as the 1st (spiritual.... and even"eternal?) 2nd creation, new one, is not like the 1st, right? In fact, it is just the opposite, "death is swallowed up in victory". Can THAT be the 2nd death that Revelation talks about? WHY not? According to Revelation death has its end in the lake of fire (which is the second death). Revelation 20:14. Death of death! How can you not see it? The 2nd death is the death of the 1st death (which created so much trouble and pain)! And then: no more death. Can we really reconcile that plain statement ("no more death") with the theory of "eternal death"? Can we really reconcile Jesus' annullment (destruction, nullification) of the death (2nd Timothy 1:10) with "eternal death"? Somethin is not right here. Bible says "no more death" and preachers talk about "eternal death". ??

One does not avoid Gehenna by plucking out one's eye. No, not at all, that plucking out or cutting off of one member IS GEHENNA FIRE but it can be handled one member at a time, whereas to not deal with these sins when they arise will result in ALL of the person being cast into this Gehenna fire which burns the flesh of sin. This is precisely why the unrighteous are cast into lake of fire because they have not dealt with the body of sin, so their whole body OF SIN must be burned out of them.

The hand represents SIN in our HEARTS that we must CUT out and MORTIFY (put to DEATH) as Paul says! Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified (Put to DEATH)with him, that the BODY of SIN might be DESTROYED, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Martin would have us believe that dying to the flesh is unrighteousness, oblivion, and as he says, "one cannot learn ANYTHING in death."

There are indeed a few passages that contradict that view. Namely Rev 20:5 and 2 Thessalonians 1: 8-9 However both of these passages are in error.Rev 20:5 is not in the oldest manuscripts and 2 Thessalonians 1: 8-9 is a very badly mistranslated passage as well as misunderstood. Where it says "taking vengence" it can also be translated "giving vindication". And when it talks of "everlasting destruction" it actually is "age abiding destruction" of there life in the now, while physically alive.

@cumbco Martin is wrong. The Second Death is surely a death of the flesh. The Elect will not be hurt of this Second Death because as Paul says they "die daily" (I Cor 15:31). For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do MORTIFY (Put to DEATH) the deeds of the body, ye shall live (Rom 8:13). Putting to death the body of sin is the RIGHTEOUS thing to do. We know that we have passed from DEATH unto LIFE, because we love the brethren (I John 3:14).

The First Death is the death of the physical human body; men can destroy the body but not the soul.

The Second Death is the death of the soul; God can destroy both body and the SOUL.

This is the Second Death when God destroys even the soul of a man.

Martin, have you considered the timeline of John's vission and the destruction of Jerusalem. I am asking this as I believe that the truth of LoF and the second death is also found in the parable of Lazerus in Luke 16. I believe that the second death is the second destruction of the temple of Jerusalem. The second death is about the loss of daily sacrifice for the Jews as prophecized in Dan 8. In Luke 16 Christ said the richman died and went to hades in the flame.

The Second Death/Lake of Fire is not Hell. because Hell cannot be thrown into hell. Those that have gone through the First Resurrection are exempt from this. I will explain.
Throughout scripture water is used in metaphorical ways to illustrate a point or teach something as were so many other words are. Yeshua pronounced himself many times as being the water, the wine, the vine, the bread, the fire, the good shepard, the king, etc..., As we saw clouds were people and the sea is a people as well, sheep are people, branches are people, angels are ministers, flames of fire are people etc.... To understand The Lake of fire we must see as God sees to understand judgment. This lake is a large body of Spirit led children of God. These Spirit filled elders/Judges/ ministers that instruct, exhort, correct, edify the Word of God. Debunking falseness in human rational theories, religious programmed thinking, bad teachings and misunderstandings on topics that involve salvation, hell, death, devil, the second resurrection/judgement etc...., unhealthy, wrong or immature mindsets, false teachings, improper doctrines, unhealed hurts and people that oppose God or are anti-Christ(s), against God or adversarial. Sulfer and brimstone speak of a refining and purifying process in a fire. The living Word in a submitted Spirit Led and filled people does this by sanctification through the Holy Spirit moving in and through them by teaching, correcting, edifying, judging a lost person or people to change their path or attitude that has led to a life of separatism, confusion, strife, poverty and war or living a hell lifestyle. As ministers of God/ mature sons and daughters of God/ Bride or Church or Corporate Body of Messiah we are to take on the image of God as ambassadors, children, written epistles, Kings and Queens, priests and priestesses, prophets and prophetesses, the Manchild company, judges.angels( pastors, preachers, teachers, evangelists, apostles, helpers of the ministrys)

Paul says, If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through FIRE(I Cor 3:11-15). Still think that this fire is literal? Gods Elect will quickly be corrected because they have spent a lifetime cutting of the body of sin therefore their whole body will not be cast into this Gehenna Fire Judgment of correction. Unbelievers on the other hand do not deal with the fleshly mind so their whole body of sin will experience God's Fiery Law (Deut 33:2).
